I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that the entire computing power on the shuttle is less than a couple of Sinclair Spectrums. (or was it Apollo 11?)

Erm - I suspect that the Space Shuttle presents slightly more challenges (if you'll pardon the pun) than this little in car navigation system, and the consequences of failure are just a tad more serious. Rather a bizarre analogy if you don't mind me saying so.

The point I was obviously failing to get across is that the impact of any bugs in that application are so serious that they put an enormous amount of effort into debugging, and they still don't trust themselves to find them all.

OK - let's be really serious then shall we ? (sorry but the Bowie thing did make me raise a teeeny weeny smile - Major TomTom - fits rather well don't you think ?).

And my point was that TT obviously don't give a toss - you don't have to be a flamin' rocket scientist to notice that when you make a hands-free call for instance you nearly blow the recipients head off with a loud shriek in their earhole now do you !

Hmm...... The thoughts of a TomTom or Garmin or any other car based Sat nav attached to the windscreen of a shuttle for that matter on RTB don't bare thinking about Shocked Shocked by the way it wouldn't work until the hardware was well into the earths atmosphere as civilian units don't like Mach 20+ Wink Mike

With the GPS satellites orbiting at 12,500 miles, and the space shuttle at 200 to 400 miles then it would get a very good view of the satellites.
Regarding the speed, okay it is not mach 20+ but lots of missiles determine their position using GPS.
We now finally have someone who could use buddies to link up with the MIR space station....

But civilian units are limited not to work above a certain velocity or height.

I'm sure the space shuttle could get dispensation to use a military spec GPS receiver chipset installed. Wink

Reading through the forums i can see people are having so many problems and faults with the 520/720. Why is it everytime TomTom release a new product, whether its a Sat Nav, an accessory or software, there's always something wrong with it? Do the people not test these before they get released into production? How can you sell something that doesn't work properly? It makes me mad reading about it. It seems like the buyers are the beta testers. TomTom is not new to this market. They've had a lot of years experience in this field now so stop making products that only half work. God knows how many problems the 920 will have.

Maybe it's time for TomTom Customers to move on? Possibly over to Garmin?

One of my customers previously used garmin, but out of 100 units / month, average 20 had faults, Garmin were less than helpful, since moving to tomtom, the figure has dropped to less than 5. I like tomtom as they support pna, smartphone, symbian, ppc, palm, embedded and open platforms, and their tech support, pre-sales ,post sales is much, much better.
