I'm more upset now than I was the day Elvis died - I'd always looked up to you as the guy giving those driving on water lessons
Looks like I'll just have to stick to walking on water for now |
From my point of view, the ferry is always preferable to the tunnel, it is like having a break on your journey, it gives you time to either get a bite to eat, or an hours kip, or both, so it is much more civilised than the tunnel.
The advantage the tunnel has over the ferry is the fact people can't go anywhere, whereas on the ferry you always risk losing the odd passenger or two.
The disadvantage of the tunnel is actually getting the vehicle on it, if you have P45's you have about an inch either side to play with, quite daunting when you do it the first couple of times, but like everything it gets easier with experience _________________ Tomtom Go730T

On some journeys I bet you feel this wouldn't be a bad thing - but sod's law would say its the wrong passengers you'd lose

If you have a P45, doesn't that mean you don't have a job to come back to?
This being the case, you shouldn't mind adding a few go-faster stripes along your coach _________________ Andy

In bad weather the tunnel is way ahead with speed and comfort.
I haven't been recently, but i used to get £35 to £40 return trips (back next day) Eurotunnel used to offer them on their web site, or for £5 more i would pick tickets up at Folkestone and go next day, i will have to look to see if the offers are still around.
As i live next to the tunnel i even used to use these trips to leave in the afternoon and back late, shopping at Cite Europe.
Even at that cheap price though, it still took some working out to make sure we bought a bargain to regain the cost, but at least filling up with petrol was a lot cheaper.

As i live so near the port, i must also support them, I also agree the ferry gives more time to relax, the tunnel might be quicker but is so boring.
In good weather the ferry gives you more of a holiday feeling that you are actually going somewhere different.
Tickets for £1 (foot passenger) £10 (includes car) are sometimes offered in the press, as a special offer - return (back same day). _________________ TomTom Go 60

You have to remember the chunnel is still in trouble, and at times when you use them you can see it, esp when it gets busy. _________________ Dom

At least if a ferry goes down, there's a chance that you might survive
...if the tunnel floods
Not to mention the view
People say that they're afraid of flying. WRONG - they're afraid of crashing
Having said that, on of my college lecturers lost her husband when Herald of Free Enterprise went down outside Zeebrugge in 1986.

You're right. You wouldn't catch me in the tunnel. No way. If it's true that the Channel Tunnel doesn't leak, then why do the trains have windscreen wipers???? I think we should be told... _________________ Gone fishing! |

I can understand if people have travelled all the way from the west country to prefer the ferry for a break in driving but for me it has to be the tunnel. I can be driving down the Autoroute in under 2 hours from home. Having said that, I would probably still be using Hoverspeed - SeaCat if they hadn't pulled out.
The fares for the tunnel for e.g. this September are as low as £22 each way, day or overnight, so for £44 + optional £12 travel/breakdown insurance it's just over £11 per person based on 5 in the car, £14 each if there are 4. That's not bad.
I usually travel out with an almost empty tank and save a few £££'s on diesel, plus the savings on the wine and 'baccy' etc., it's basically like having a free trip for those of us living within a couple of hours or so from the tunnel. |
