howeer, they DO do a speed camera one in this style - image 10 on http://www.crownukltd.com/pages/new_prod_spp.html# the 'street seen' but it does have a clear illuminated display for the speed and the camera

Am I correct in thinking that this sneaky camera does not use road markings at all but use an induction loop system instead to detect redlight jumpers? _________________ Navman iCN 520 |

I recon it's a one for all systeme where the driver has no idea whats in the sign. If you look at the suggestions on the site it could have any number of permutations, which I suppose gets them out of the paint the speed cameras yellow law.
"Well if we make everything look the same and paint everything yellow they won't have a clue, will they"
We'll see these things all over the place before you know it! _________________ Dom

The one on the A40 hasn't got any of that, though.
It looks like a "StreetSmart" pole, and who knows what is inside, but it IS pointing at a red-light junction. |

I passed it recently, and I noticed that between the camera and the junction there is another pole. At the top of the pole there is what appears to be a 4" to 6" cube with an orange disk on it. Have you seen this? Do you have any idea what that is? Is it related to the camera? Unfortunately, when I passed I didn't have my camera! _________________ Jock

Just had a look at it and it is new. Wasn't there when I took my pictures. My guess is its a light, as it has a red lens on it and has a slight luminessance to it. I assume they have had some problems with the Night shot on the camera and need some extra lumination. After all it is one hellova big junction. Definatly not a camera! _________________ Dom

I'll have a look on my way home tonight and grab a picture on my phone (especially for Dennis )
Maybe we could have our own little PGPSW meet-up in the petrol station and dance round the pole.
Or maybe not.... :D |

I can already see the hate mail winging it's way. Imagine being the one who had to design a speed camera knowing what we know now.
With regard to the camera which incorperates the speed limit into the face of it, I think he has a winning formula with it, and would be happier to see those on the road than normal gatsos. _________________ Dom

Must be - University of West of England is north Bristol and Crown is at Portishead, south west of Bristol - I did a pickup from a firm opposite and the despatch guy told me "that's where they make poles for speed cameras". UWE has a tradition of industrial projects like that. _________________ Dennis

BBC One news 08:00 Saturday 26/05/07 they are running an article on this very camera type (should be around 08:00 to 08:30)
Repeats at 09:15
Have a read of This which explains quite a bit more, Speed and Red Light capable, although as yet cannot be used for evidence as still on trial - Mike
Edit once to add BBC link mikealder - edit two to correct date, and mention 2nd time they are showng it
