My Go930 is refusing to connect to any of my computers. They all show the same errors.

When plugging the USB lead in I get:
'The last USB device malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it'

When it attempts to install drivers I get:
' Device descriptor request failed'.

Other than that it works fine as it will find satellites and compute a route.

Anyone able to offer a solution?

Sounds more like a PC problem than a device hardware problem

OP did say "any" implying more than one. PC problem? Probably not, especially if it has worked in the past.

Obvious question: Whilst you've tried several computers, have you tried different USB cables?

Are you still able to charge the 930 in the car? IIRC the 930 charges by a mini USB cable. So if you can charge via the cable then the USB port on the 930 may be OK and not damaged?

Regards,

Thanks for the responses.

The problem is present on a Windows 10 desktop and laptop, a Windows 8.1 desktop and laptop, a Windows 7 laptop and a Windows 7 tablet. I would assume the problem lies with the TomTom.

I've tried two USB cables in 10+ USB sockets.

The TomTom will charge in all of those sockets and a mains adapter.

It has worked in all of the above scenarios in the past, the problem appeared from nowhere with nothing having changed in the way it was being used or set up.

It looks as though the response it gives when challenged by the computers isn't making sense: 'Device descriptor request failed'?

I have an iMac and a 530. When opening up to modify files, something I have done without trouble for years, I'm frequently getting the 'Disc not ejected properly' message. Also for years I have disconnected by clicking on the disconnect icon, but am now having to drag the external drive icon to the trash to get it to close properly. I have also found that I cannot now copy the contents of my 530 and 550 to my computer as it refuses to copy some files. I am running 10.10.5 software and had assumed that there is increasing incompatibility between the old TT software and the newer Apple software.

OK .... IIRC my old 730 had an SD card slot, therefore I presume that the 930 has one too?

If the 930 has an SD card, have you:
1. Taken the SD card out and tried accessing via a card reader?
2. Take another SD card that's large enough and copy the latest back of the 930 onto it. You do have older backups of the 930 right?

As it's a problem on all PCs it does suggest that the 930 is the root of the problem. However to be sure, do all of the PCs that you've tried work OK? i.e. do all of the devices, especially USB devices work OK?

If that still doesn't work then all I can suggest is Google for "Device descriptor request failed" and see if anything works.

Regards,

I'm using an SD card and SDHC in the 530 and a micro SDHC in the 550. I'm no genius - but whatever works...

Very often the USB port on the device is the problem. The port is only connected at the sides the four data/power outlet from the rear port are just a dry connections. over time the port starts to move and they loose contact.

Thanks, looks like I need to dismantle it.

If you strip it down and look, the USB socket will be soldered at the 4 corners.
I try to clamp the back edge to the circuit board then resolder the rear corners. If your hands are steady enough and you have the right soldering tools you may be able to solder the 4 pins to the boards but its very tricky.

I'll give it a go, though my soldering iron has a poker as a first cousin!
