I'm looking to upgrade my current TomTom Navigator (on iPAQ) to a PND; the main reason that I cant get map updates for the current version.
One of the benefits of my current setup is the ability to have a number of POI's on a storage card that although don't use a lot have as a back up when travelling. Should the need arise I can then copy the ov2 and bmp files across into the map folder, use and then when finished, remove. This is because there of limit on the no of POIs. I don't use it too often but is handy.
As I'm not that familiar with PNDs can someone advise whether this or something similar is possible for x40 or x50 units ?

Yes, it's perfectly viable. I think the current limit is about 200 POI categories, so with our UK speed camera database you'd have well over 150 categories to play with.
As for model, consider what you want it for - the x40 and x50 have phone capability and various other bells and whistles. The Live models, which includes my XL, have Google search included (subscription after initial free trial), which I have found really excellent - e.g. it usually finds most business addresses I'm looking for and yesterday found me a perfect fish and chip shop in the wilds of Sunderland!
One advantage from your point of view perhaps, with the x40/x50 models is they come with SD card slot and you could copy your device onto a card and have one card with loadsa POIs and one with just a sensible set. Switch off, whip out the card and stick another one in and off you go. _________________ Dennis

The current custom POI limit is 255 categories for devices runing Navcore 8,351 (not too sure about the XL IQ or XL Live) looks like its something to do with Binary 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 8 bits make a Byte
One thing you cannot do with the stand alone devices that you can do with a PDA is copy POI files in and out of your map folder, but you would be going from a limit of something like 30 to over 250 so I doubt its much of an issue - Mike
