|

Might incur some wrath here by posting a question again in another forum, but I suspect I may have posted this in the wrong place before - certainly havn't had a reply!
I could do with a bit of help please. I have just aquired an Ipaq RX5935 "Travel Companion" which comes with Tomtom 6 preloaded. Very pleased with it! Two questions (and I suspect the second one should be in another forum, but here goes)- firstly I cannot get an audible alert for the cameras I have downloaded, I have gone through the motions to set up an audible alert in tomtom preferences but the machine remains stubbornly silent despite the camera symbol blinking red when I get in the zone, so to speak. Any help here would be welcome.
Secondly, is it possible to "copy" the tomtom program from the Ipaq (it is installed on to it's built in memory & factory loaded so no CD or anything) and install it on a second Ipaq that I use? a: because I like it and want it on both, and b: because it might be a good idea to back up the installation in case I have to format the Ipaq at some point in the future. I would be happy to copy & paste in active synch if that is what to do, just need to get all the files.
Much appreciate any advice.

Tim, if the application is pre-installed to the device it will survive a hard reset, if you need to back it up consider looking at Sprite back-up, at least this saves all your data in the event it all goes wrong.
Did the camera database come from pocketgpsworld, if so the bmp icons are missing, simply download it again and re-install to the map folder of your memory card.
Spoken alerts, are you messing around with the data.chk file or ogg file method? given some answers we can get this working (I think) - Mike |

Is 'Jane' working, or is she quiet ? If she's quiet then maybe there is no voice selected, which is what I do to quieten her...but the camera warnings are not affected. Stupid thought but if the system sound is totally turned off, then you won't get anything at all, Jane or cameras...if you see waht I mean ! |

Hello Both Mikes - thanks for replying.
1. Backing up - it is good to know that the program will survive a hard reset, no need to back up tomtom then. How about "pinching it" and copying it on to my other Ipaq - is this possible?
2. Audible alerts. I can see the icon so I am pretty confident that I have copied over the pgpsw bitmaps, it is simply that the alert does not make a sound even though it is all set up to do so in preferences. There is no problem with normal sound, i.e. Jane comes through loud and clear. I might try to see if the audible alert works with the preinstalled poi's e.g. fuel stops, but I guess it will. I presume it will be something silly when I get down to it but I'm if I can spot it!
Yours hopefully

1/ Under the license agreement you can only have the map installed for use on a single device at any one time.
2/ I would still like to know which method you are trying to use for camera alerts, also which database (Speed cameras) are you trying to set-up the i.e. single file, consolodated or speed zoned - please have a read of THIS for a few pointers, which sound have you allocated to the warnings?
The above assumes you have actually set-up the Warning system for each camera? - take a look at Change Preferences/ Manage POI/ Warn When Near POI and configure each camera seperately - Mike |

Thanks for starting a dialogue Mike - we should get this sorted now.
This is what I have done re the audible alerts. I chose (to keep things simple to begin with!) the single file download so I unzipped the release notes & licence etc. along with a .bpm file and a single ov2. file. I pasted the .ov2 and .bmp files into the following folder on the ipaq - my device/ipaq file store/ipaq GPS/western_europe.
I launched tomtom navigator 6 on the ipaq. Went to change preferences, then enable/disable poi's and ensured that the pocketgps uk sc was listed and ticked. Then back to change preferences, to manage poi's, then to warn when near poi, selected pocket gps uk sc, changed warn when closer than: to 300yrds, and selected "Polite 1" as a warning sound. Finally I checked the warn only if poi is on route box.
I wasn't trying to be to complicated at this stage, so I decided not to use speed zoned files and different warning for each. A simple repeated beep is adequate. I can test the arrangement by driving past a camera as one is near me, or I have been simulating the drive by using the show route demo option.
Normal voice instructions are working fine. When I get to a camera the camera icon is clearly visible on the screen and when it gets within range a red box appears around it but no beeps! It is the all important beeps that I am after!
Hope you can help, figers crossed.

Any particular reason why the 'Western Europe' map and not the regular GB map...would that make a difference ? |

When I bought the ipaq it was only about £20 more (and it was in stock) to go for the 5900 series rather than 5700. This meant that it had LAN, an extra 1Gb of memory and western europe maps rather than just GB. Might be useful - planning to hire a car in Italy later in the year! There is only one map on the machine so it is not possible to select just GB.

Mike - I have had another play with the tomtom and sorted the audible warning problem. Various things. Firstly I had misunderstood the "Only Warn if POI is on route" option. I had presumed this meant only warn if the POI is on the road being used, whereas I now realise it means only warn at all if a route is set. Secondly the warnings do not work in demo mode. Thirdly the warning only sounds once and not repeatedly as I had expected.
So I am happy now, however I may experiment with custom warnings as you suggested since the standard alarms are easy to miss when they only sound once. It would be preferable to have an option to switch the alarm to repeat mode when ever a POI is within range.
Many thanks for all your interest & help.

Tim it sounds like you have made some progress and understand the Warn ONLY if POI on ROUTE option. You should get the warnings in Demo mode, make sure the route replay speed is set to around 100% though to be sure. Also if a navigation command is being issued this will over-ride the camera alert, so it can be missed.
Are you still seeing the red icon instead of the proper camera icon on the screen? - if so please make sure that there is a file with the extension .bmp and its actual file name is indentical to the .ov2 file.
POI files comprise of two files the .ov2 file contains the actual positional data, the .bmp file contains the icon. IF the .bmp file is missing or incorrectly named, TomTom will place a dark red square icon in lue of anything else being available.
Have you installed anything more than the single speed camera file, consolodated by type or speed zoned at any point?
There are ways to get more than one warning with the TomTom for speed cameras which involve mutiple copies of the same data but the files have to be re-named, I would skip this for the time being until you are confident in setting up and installing the files - it doesn't take too long to get used to it, at some point in the near future you will wonder why it all seemed so difficult, remember we all had to start with this technology at some point - Mike |

You want multiple warnings ? TT is not the way to go...look at Checkpoint, or IMHO, even better, POIWarner....(coupled with POI Ediot even better....but not, unfortunately with cameras from this site.) |

Be very careful...the latest version of TT Home is flacky, very flacky to say the least, and DON'T rely on it for your backups....you could be very disappointed. |
