Hi JLW.
I never use XT mode. I always use ST mode on my Fortuna Clip-On when driving with TTNav.
Basically, you should start off with the GPS receiver in ST mode and try it. If you’re walking or you’re in an urban canyon then you might want to try XT mode.

I generally use ST for driving, but recently I had to switch to XT when I failed to get a lock after waiting several minutes.
I still don't know why ST didn't work that day. I was stationary, in an open car park with a good view of the sky. It was raining, with very thick cloud overhead, so maybe that was it. XT worked fine, and ST has worked since (in better weather).
So, keep a pin handy if the weather looks bad... |

rain and cloudy weather is something that indeed will negatively affect acquiring a lock fast. |

ST mode works well in most situations, but I find that it doesn't always work too well on trains, planes or in cars with sintered windscreens, even if you previously had good satellitte lock before entering the vehicle. XT tends to work in all environments, but the speed readout is 5 to 10s slower than ST mode, despite the fact that screen position appears to be pretty spot on -strange that. |
