Hi, im looking for a new Satnav and came across the ICN 550 for approx £200 which i thoguht was good value. I believe the 550 is a somewhat older model, but is it still a worthwhile buy? I like it because it has all the European roads stored on its 4 GB hard drive.
many thks

The 550 a reasonable product - it had the option of the traffic module as well. If you don't mind its clunky good looks , and price is a serious issue, its a good proposition. The software used is essentially the same as the any other Navman products. What it lacks compared to the latest offerings is full 7 digit postcodes (Has 5 digits) and the latest SiRF III GPS. The GPS is therefore not quite as sensitive.
The only other issue to consider is will you be able to buy updated maps, but then theres really no need to - after all the roads don't change that much over a few years. I would advise update the whole unit - this thechnology is moving so fast that by the time your maps are out of ate the newest systems will be cheaper, better, more featured and easier to use than todays. |

Don't buy the 550 it is garbage.
I had an ICN610 for a while (worked well no complaints) but then one one day it went t*ts up.
Replaced it with a 550 but only for 3 days:
1) Maps are really old
2) Speaker is really really quiet even on full volume - impossible to hear if the car stereo is on.
3) if you take a wrong turn, it can often take over 40 seconds to reroute, by which time you are often seriously off course.
4) Screen becomes pretty much invisible in moderate sunlight.
I took mine back and got a refund, bought a 530 instead, this was cheaper and works fine - no complaints. maps are much newer than 550 |
