Setting "way points"

I'm just starting to get the hang of using the TT5. I've tried using the "travel via" option, but was a little disappointed to find you can only set one "via"..

I guess I've been spoilt with AutoRoutes, where you can set as many as you like.

Do I have to live with this, or is there a way to make it set more?

You'll find that 'Itineraries' is the feature you want. It will enable you to do what you describe. It's accessed from the main menu.

There's a quirk about using Itineraries offline to pre-plan your journey, but this can be worked round. See the sticky thread on known bugs for more info on this.

That's good advice from Paul, Monty.

When you use Itinerary Planning you can set your journey and have the choice of making the entries Destinations or Waypoints. If they are Destinations it will announce that you've arrived, whereas, if they are waypoints it will just go through them to your next desired destination.

Example: You want to go to point A via points B, C and D.

You set point B as a waypoint 'coz you don't want to stop just travel on that road - no stop.

You set point C as a destination 'coz they have a pub which does great meals - stop.

You set point D as a waypoint because you want the coast road - no stop.

I keep preaching this but Streets&Trips/Autoroute are invaluable in trip planning for TomTom. The resulting files are easy converted to something TT can chew. You can generate both POI database and Itineraries.

Used the TT5 for the first time in earnest today, and it worked like a charm! Didn't have time to set the Itinerary thing, to make sure I went exactly the way I wanted to, so just set one "via" which looked to work

Except it threw up an odd thing. I didn't set the point exactly on the A road I was travelling - it ended up about 100 ft off to the right, on a B road. The TT wanted me to turn off, to visit the place I'd marked. I ignored it, assuming it would re-calculate the route. It sort of did, but kept trying to get me to turn round! Eventually I hit "re-calculate" and only then did it ignore it altogether

Sound about right?

Yeah that sounds about right. If you imagine the waypoint/destination as a block of paint on the road it will keep trying to get you to drive over it to register your arrival before moving on to the next point.

If you are using the itinerary planning option and decide to miss out a point, just go into itinerary planning and mark that point as 'visited'

A word of advice when entering waypoints. If you choose a waypoint from the map which is located on a dual carriageway, zoom in closely enough to ensure that you click on the correct side of the road. If you accidentally click on the wrong carriageway, it will take you to the next place where you can turn, and then bring you back again so that you pass over the exact point you had marked!
A lot of apparent routing errors arise from this - it doesn't think whether the route makes any sense, it just does exactly what you have asked it to do!
