Has anyone had any experience of this? While battery powered the unit has turned itself off a couple of times mid route. I don't think there are battery problems as it turns back on straight away and runs for ages again.
Is this a firmware fault or do I need to get it replaced? |

hi
my i3 has also switched itself of a few times when powered with batteries, i presumed it was just the batteries running out allthough they had only been used for about 1 hour(or less). |

What battery type are you using, there is an option in the settings for telling it either alkaline or nimh. It may be set wrong for your batteries and switching off too early ? |

You need the best you can afford, Battery capacity is quoted in mA the larger the number, the longer it will work for, 2600mA is typical these days for good AA cells, but you can get 3200mA if you shop around, make sure you always use the correct charger though these cells can get very hot if put in the wrong device - Copper tops are not much use in these devices it will eat them and your wallet, finally treat them with respect don't put them loose in your pocket when charged they will short out on keys/ change etc and burn your leg (I am talking from experiance, and its hurts) - Mike |

I have had a similar problem today but my i3 switched itself off while i was using the car power lead.. I also have batteries installed but didnt get the 30 seconds countdown screen when it loses the external power.. It basically just shut straight off. It has done it twice today, once it was in the map mode and onve it was in navigating mode....Any Ideas?
Apart from that its been a great unit and i have been very impressed with it. |

Hi folks,
just back from the USA where my I3 worked perfectly. Well almost perfectly. I was using a friends car and the cigarette lighter was knackered,so it was battery powered. It kept switching off mid route and I noted the times this happened and it was when the batteries had a bit of use (not fully used up) and when the voice was giving directions. I put the volume down to 1 and no more switching off. Seems to me the speaker uses a lot of power.
Maps worked perfectly and not too many unknown roads (surprising considering the number of new roads around Minneapolis.
Hope you all had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year |

I have a new twist on my unit switching off. After it had done it the first 2 times i done a hard reset and then tried it the next day. It switches off at exactly the same spot !! Its not caused by the amount of time the unit has been on as i varied the time i drove down the same bit of road and it switched off every time...everywhere else i am driving it has stayed on all the time.
Any ideas?
(i am using the power lead, not batteries) |

This could be due to the unit changing from one map to another .
When I first got mine it froze when it changed maps . an update on the firm ware and it was ok. |

It originally came with 2.4 which i have upgraded to 2.7...Would doing a hard reset change this back to 2.4?
If not then i cant update the software because its already done. |

I have the same problem as colpac, my i3 switches itself off when using the power lead the same as colpac's i3.
I've emailed Garmin a couple of times about this and Tom from Garmin replied that the OS team were looking at trying to fix this, so at some point, once they've pin-pointed why its happening then they will release a new firmware version in order to fix it.
Mine switches off between junctions 15 and 16 of the M25 (every time I've done the route), where have others had their i3 switch itself off....?
Kind regards |

well mines on the A580 east lancashire road near the Leigh turning, and funnily enough it worked faultlessly round the M25 the other day! |

I remember reading once that someone in Austaralia had exactely the same problem when driving through a specific area (can't remember where the post was though). It was believed to be caused by a software bug or conflict to do with the map of that particular part. |
