Help: Emtac leather case

My emtac GPS came with a leather case. This may sound like a very silly question but how do you use this. My case has a large wedge shape thing in it. If I put the GPS receiver in with the wedge then it is too tight, if I put it in without the wedge then it is too big. What am I doing wrong?

Probably not! I gave up trying to figure out what that wedge was there for!

The way I find works best, and that's to have the thick wedge at the bottom of the case, and to have the thin edge just protruding from the top. Then insert the Socket BT in with the Socket logo showing out the top, place the flap down to the velcro, and match up the rounded bit on the flap to the rounded bit on the velcro, perfect fit.



Now, on the other hand, they could have done away with this and made or ordered a thinner case!

I'm glad it is not just me. I'm thinking I could use this case for my Ixus V digital camera and buy a mobile phone leather case for the GPS receiver. Something like a case for the T68

The wedge is also great for

• holding a door open on a windy day



• trick ramp for skateboarding mice



• steadying a table with one leg shorter than the other three

Remove the wedge - the case then is ideally sized for storing SD cards in their little cases with maps on.



My theory is that the cases were originally made for something else (mini digital camera?) - maybe Pocket GPS will hold a competition to see who comes up with its' real purpose?



I found another use for the wedge though - its' ideal for stopping my dash vent moving around when I have the Ipaq mount attached!

Personally I like the wedge, I find it does help pad out the pouch, but it should have been made smaller. I think it was designed to put my Samsung T100 mobile in it.

I wondered if the wedge insert was to alter the angle that the emtac sits at when in the case? - in other words it points (slightly) more skywards. Personally I don't use it but get on fine with the emtac in the pouch alone - most of the time. But on a recent walk in the Roaches the emtac lost its signal frequently in the pouch whilst I dropped down into the woods at Danebridge, but it was fine in open country.



I have made a little pocket (now this is really sad!!) in the inside of a cloth sun hat and tried wearing it on top of my head! It works absolutely brilliantly - in thick woods and the lot, so I do wonder if keeping it flat is important and that the leather of the pouch interfers slightly. (I am afraid my family think I have gone completely round the bend and I have become quite an embarrassment to my teenage daughter).



I went on a coach journey the other day and took it for a ride - worked fine inside the seatback pocket in front of me. All in all a most impressive product.



For measuring fields (I am a farmer)I have scanned 1:2,500 maps for use in Oziexplorer and I am sure the emtac is easily accurate to <3m.



Sorry to change the subject from the leather pouch but I would welcome some comments from other emtac users about their SBAS settings - I am struggling to convince myself that switching to Auto is much of an advantage, the pointer does seem more stable (jumps about less) when the correction is lost!



I have a couple of weeks work coming up for The National Trust using their Ipaq coupled to a DGPS Max packpack receiver measuring plantations (collecting on Farmworks Farmsite mate and then Mapinfo). This will be a new experience for me but will be a great opportunity to see how an my Emtac BTGPS and OziE ( costing £240 plus about £65) compares with their DGPS Max (around £3,000 I think and SiteMate which is £250 for the basic version with no mapping & printing options).



I hope I shall come home thinking what good value the emtac is!
