Hi all.
Sorry if this is slightly off topic.
I am currently running an iPAQ 3830 with TTN3 (see setup below) with which I am very happy. I am now considering upgrading the PDA, for more features, and am looking at 54** and 55** series. I am happy to remain with the larger format as I can then utilise current accessories such as Brodit mount, extended battery wallet & CF slot, EMTAC sleeve although this could be replaced by BT at some stage.
Are there any problem areas e.g. poor speaker performance or poor SD performance etc. which anybody has encountered with these particular PDA's. Any other operational or reliability issues?
Thanks _________________ John

My 5550 has a much quieter speaker than my previous 3870. In order to use the 5550 with TT an amplified mount is essential. _________________ Kam |

I agree. My 3970 is streets ahead of my 5555 in terms of audio output, although I don't own an amplified mount. _________________ Tim |

The speaker on my 5450 is rubbish, travelling at any speed over 40 and you struggle to hear it at all

Thanks all for your responses.
I may need to do a re-think on this.

Hello John,
I have an iPAQ 5500. IMHO you do not need an external speaker, unless you are also listening to music or something like that.
Anyway, you could also consider a Bluetooth hearphone, since the iPAQ 5500 is BT-capable.

I have had the 3800 and the 3900 series Ipaqs and currently own a 5555.
there is a huge difference in speaker quality with the 55XX series. it has documented to death on the forums. I have used GPS software on all of these platforms, so let me tell you will definitely notice a big drop in sound. it is so bad I had to get an FM transmitter for my car. |

The speaker is of low power but it is hardly a major issue. You are going to need a mount in the car to power and hold the PDA and also to connect to the bottom port if you use a hard-wired GPS, so paying a little extra for a mount with an inbuilt amplifier and speaker is not going to make much difference. The recent builds of the G2500 mount from Seidio are good for this and do not require any audio cables. |

The main reason for considering the 5*** series iPAQ was the ability to retain my current accessories, EMTAC GPS sleeve, Brodit car mount, all of which work very well. With this setup, there is only one cable required fom the cigarette lighter to the EMTAC, which also powers the PDA. Very tidy. Also I have a very usefull leather case/wallet which not only has an additional large capacity battery, but also a CF slot. All are compatiblewith i5***.
If it is a case of investing in additional hardware to overcome a shortcomming in the 5***. It might make better sense to retain the present setup as a dedicated 'car system' (possibly for a second car) and to look to a more modern format format PDA for the upgrade.
Thanks for all your responses.
