I want to connect my Tungsten E to my Magellan GPS. The GPS has a DB9 serial output, which works fine when connected to my Laptop computer. Is there a way of converting the signals from my GPS (serial-DB9) output too the USB Mini B connection that the Tungsten E requires. If there is would the Tungsten E work in this configuration?

highly unlikely. The Tungsten would need to have a USB host interface, and then you would need to have Palm drivers for the USB>Serial converter cable. I don't think either exist

No.
The only way to connect GPS to Tungsten E is via IR.
But honestly I would not bother.
It is better to use another PDA.

There is a company called kirrio that has pulled together various components for sat nav with the Tungsten E, one of which is a rebadged TFAC MG30 GPS. The Taiwan Falcon Aerospace Corporation states that the TFAC MG30 has the following interfaces –

DB-9 serial connector (MG-10R, MG-30R, MGL-30R)USB serial connector (MG-10U, MG-30U, MGL-30U)PS2 serial connector (MG-30P, MGL-30P).

This would suggest to me that the output from their GPS is the same as the output from my one, or am I missing some thing obvious?

Thanks for your replies.

Yes Kirio is the one who makes a GPS package for Tungsten E.
Yes the GPS is a serial GPS, they all are.

What Kirio does is to convert RS232 data into IR so it can be used with Tungsten E.

So the Kirio one is the only choice for Tungsten E. Or you could make yourself an IR converter, of which there was an article somewhere on this site.
Whether it is worth it I have given my opinion.

Thank you all for your replies. Its looking increasing like the Tungsten E is not going to be a viable option for my Sat Nav requirements as I am unsure if using the IR port for the GPS is really a practical solution in a vehicle. I will probable wait for the technology to become less expensive as these things invariably do and purchase a self-contained system like the Tom Tom or something.

Thanks again

Antman - this may be too late for you, but there is another Tungsten TE solution out there. I bought it recently and it works extremely well. See this thread.

Pc-Mobile - to the best of my knowledge neither solution is related to the IR link. If I'm wrong - my apologies.

See the link below to see where the story started - like you I wanted to use my speed camera detector's (in this case a TALEX) GPS engine to drive the Tungsten E software.
