newbie here so any help is appreciated!
as an irishman married to a polish woman and now living in poland ive had enough of women giving directions.. nationality makes no difference!!
id like a gps unit like the garmin quest etc etc that i can use in the car and yet take with me for exploring this countrys great scenery.. except i find that there seems to be no maps for this part of the world at street level.. its maps of western europe i see mentioned mostly...
so folks can you recommend me a unit.. id rather not go down the pda route i want to be able to carry this in nature ..
thanks...... for any help.. |

If you want a Quest or similar, this might be of some use to you. _________________ Tim |

Does it do turn by turn autorouting or does it just display a moving map? You really need autorouting or else it's a bit of a waste of time. I don't read Polish so I can't figure it out.
Navteq (who make the Garmin City Select maps) are busy mapping Eastern Europe but it might be a year or two before there is any sort of coverage and then it will start out as major roads only. _________________ Gone fishing! |

That link came from the Garmin website. Click Cartography under Products, then choose 'Third Party Mapsource Developers'. _________________ Tim |

Well, bravo for the internationalist statement.
As a Polish-British dual national (does this make me European squared now?) I have looked into mapping in Poland. There are a few companies there who do mapping software and I drove around there this Christmas with my (unfortunately mute) Garmin Vista loaded with a very decent map of Poland made by eMapa (www.emapa.pl) with a laptop module which loads maps into Garmin units. The cheapo version I bought does not do routing, but they do the software at all levels.
I am sure you will find a voice equipped Garmin unit compatible with Mapsource files, which most of these mapping products are compatible with. Otherwise it is the dreaded PDA route, but worry not, there are now ruggerised PDAs, which will be as hardy as a Garmin and will additionally balance your chequebook and do your email (unlike the Garmins).
Ask your good lady to read what they say on the website, but find some better explanation for the purchase, I'd suggest.
;-)
