I have TTN3 which was first installed in Nov '04, a subsequent re-install to a different device in Dec '04 was carried out. I now wish to install to a new PDA (other devices not available) but cannot as the system will not authenticate - in breach of licence agreement. So a 2 month old version of TTN3 is only fit for use as a frizzby (confirmed by TT Customer Support). Cost per month/mile HIGH 8O .
TT do not seem to be aware that PDAs are similar to mobile phones in terms of updating/replacement rates (mind you I still have a Palm Vx and use a basic GPRS enabled phone! )
Only option, buy new software at full retail price - which I did, only it is CP5 which can be de-activated and subsequently re-activated on different devices 8) . Good pricing too for quickstart version from GPSFORLESS.
True value yet to be decided as the PDA system is employed as a second vehicle nav kit and will be compared against a VDO-Dayton in-vehicle system for usability/accuracy - hopefully over a longer period. |

You get through a Pocket PC every two months? I'm sure there's other users like you, but I guess you're not the norm. I change PDA every 2-3 years.
TomTom's activation policy is fairly well publicised in here - if you change device as often as you do, it won't be any good to you. If you wait 180 days from the last activation, you can activate it on whatever device you buy next; you can also use it to qualify an upgrade to the next version when that's released.

This was an unusual set of circumstances for me, I was still using an elderly Psion3 until last year and still have a not so useful Palm V. However, a look around this forum suggests that a significant number of users upgrade to the latest PDA toy on a regular basis; this is also my experience of users in the IT and telecomms area. PDAs are now a commodity item (enter Lidl etc.).
You are correct about the TT licence details being available in this forum - but which average purchaser checks for licence details here prior to purchase (I was not aware of this forum). The details are certainly not prominent when making an internet or store purchase even assuming the buyer knows the implications.
Anyway, I'll keep my frizby for another 180 days and see if it turns from pumpkin to carriage!
In the meantime the TRANSFERABLE CP5 will be evaluated and then installed on either HIS or HERS pda depending on its usability. BTW, I seem to recall the re-activation aspect of CP5 being noted in the review on this forum.
I assume reviewers buy new copies of TT products for use on each pda evaluation - expensive! |

So what happens if you lose, or have your PDA stolen? Do you buy yourself a new PDA and then wait up to 6 months to use the TomTom sottware?

I have CP5 so I don't really care but.....
The TT3 rules are patent rubbish. They seem to border on restrictive practice. This bizarre paranoia should be clearly explained BEFORE you purchase. What are they worried about? Piracy?
Hello? Tom Tom ...your product has already been cracked. Nothings safe in this world so I would suggest you make the buyer "experience" an easier one and accept that the majority will always buy the kosher copy for its support.
But as I said I don't really care |
