Hi,
Just wondered if anyone watched Coronation Street tonight (Sunday 9th November, 2003) and saw the competition between an A-Z road atlas and an in-car satellite navigation system?
Two taxi drivers were told to get to a certain destination as quickly as they could - one using an ordinary A-Z road atlas (Les Battersby) and the other using an in-car satellite navigation system (Dev Allahan).
As it turned out, the driver using the road atlas won because the whole thing was a set-up. The route contained a lot of roundabouts and flyovers, which the navigation system did not cope very well with apparently! The comment from Dev when he returned to the office much later than Les was:
"Every time I went under a fly-over or round a roundabout, Miss Robovoice on the dashboard sounded like she'd just dropped acid! I was on one roundabout for five minutes before she told me the right direction to go! "
So it looks like Street Cars won't be installing satellite navigation in all of their cars now... Shame - looking at the systems might just have been the most interesting thing about that program!!

well we use mio 168 in fife for our taxis and so far so good using tom tom 3
the only downside is the cost of the software if only a company would make a gps software package for taxi or fleet operators it would be a great seller
as for security reasons aswell think of the driver in his cab he gets a call its a dark winters night in a bad area of town he can find the address easy and it tells him when he is at the right house or flat no more getting out of the cab and no more muggings down a dark alleyway
come on you big companys give us a fleet version of your software please |
