Hello All,
Just got my first pocket pc (2nd Hand) it appeared to be a clean install as it asked me to configure it etc of Pocket PC 2002.
However I could not find Windows messenger, it was not installed.
Now I have put on a downloaded version of msn messenger for pocket pc 02 and it gives me an error:
"Failed because the service is not compatible with this version of the program"
Now I have downloaded the update plenty and tried to modify the version but it dosent load up the screen where programs communicate with the pocket pc and dosent update.
I also tried to middle option (Repair?) and it said files were missing.
So can anyone help as to why this could be happening and what I could do to fix it?
Has anyone else had pocket pc 2002 without msn installed?
Many Thanks in advance,
Robert Maris |

Depending on the size of the ROM some PocketPCs actually came without the MSN messenger. And, some while ago Microsoft had issued a mandatory security update for the Messenger that you need to install in order to access the servers.
What Pocket PC do you have? _________________ Lutz

That's a 16 MB ROM, and indeed comes without the MSN client (and without the Microsoft Reader and without the Terminal Services client).
Try to clean your machine up, and then install the MSN client and the security update. _________________ Lutz

A 128mb CF card is in the post. Shall I wait till that is here and just install it on that or will that not work? |

Not sure, haven't tried that. (My 3630 is a pre-production model with 32 MB of ROM 8) ). Just try it out.. _________________ Lutz

Note that Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition devices do not need any updates - the built in version of MSN Messenger works correctly.
I don't think the update has been incorporated into any Pocket PC 2003 ROMs, but I may be mistaken. If you apply a ROM update to a Pocket PC 2003 device (or hard reset it), it's worth trying MSN Messenger first before possibly wasting RAM on an unnecessary update.
