Hello,
My Navman is broken following a re-installation. To be specific, the SmartST Professional software won't run as it keeps telling me that I need to activate the software via the installer CDROM - Something I have now done ten times. The installer cdrom tells me that the software is installed OK and I then try to start SmartST Pro - "Authentication Error: Please activate using the cd installer application".
The Navman support team (UK) don't seem to know what's going on - so much so that they are suggesting I return the unit to them where they have "specific tools" which they can use to activate the software.
My problem is that I purchased this thing for some major projects. The first of which is next weekend.
I am trying to understand the process of how this thing is activated. The software is installed, the desktop registers the software over the internet, then surely there must be some form of information (either registry or file) which is tranfered to the PDA (an IPAQ 3970) which tells it "OK, go ahead and start the application".
Does anyone have any information on the activation process? How would you activate this software if you had no internet connection?
Thanks for any help.
Regards
bmak

Do you have a personal firewall, on the PC you're trying to use to install SmartST Pro ? If so, disable the firewall and try activation again. There are some ports that are required (unfortunately I don't know which ones). If you're trying to install this from a company that has a network firewall in place, you may have some problems.
There have been known problems with activation where the activation server seems to be down or there's a glitch, sometimes trying a few days later or contacting support they will check this and normally you'll then find it will work. If it's not working, then you may have activated SmartST Pro on more than three Pocket PC's. If you have installed it onto a Pocket PC which has been lost or stolen, or replaced with another one under warranty this will inhibit your activation and you'll need to contact Navman and explain this as you'll only be allowed three installs onto physically different hardware. You will be able to reinstall to the same device time and time again.
There is no way of activating the software if you don't have an internet connection. But of a pain, and a shame! |

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply. This is the original machine on to which I installed the Navman software, also, I have been in close conversation with Bruce Swann of Navman UK and would have expected him to suggest any particular problem with the "over-registration" of this software.
To date he has not mentioned it and seems to think that returning the entire unit to him is the only real option. There has also been no suggestion of the firewall problem. Can you tell me if you would expect to see a "registration successful" message even if the actual activation process had failed?
Thanks again, you're the only person who seems to know about this.
Regards

You wouldn't see a registration successful if it failed. |

Just a thought... but have you checked that you are using the EUROPE CD and not the UK CD for installation. |

Laser is corret on this account. If you are installing from the UK CD, and activating using the Euro software key, you will get an Activation Successful notice, but the iPAQ will ask you to activate. _________________ Who's Your Daddy? |

i'm having the same problem, but mine is a different story,
for some strange reason the serial number and tag id number in asset viewer has been removed on my 3970 ever since i upgraded the rom, it also changed my device id from UK to USA and says that i have a mono screen and doesn't know what revision the rom is ???, i spoke to hp and they have taken it back to sort it out, that was a week ago and i still havent had it back...
navman reckon this is causing my problem
cant live with em, and can live without em ay! _________________ Compaq Ipaq H3970 with Navman 3400 gps |
