Has nyone done this, or know if it's possible, to get a wire from some power source besides the lighter socket? Maybe modify the cable (or safer yet, get a cable made up) that can be connected to the power sockeyt on the GO, and then conceeled and connected somewhere else in the car ... like the battery? |

I beleive there is (or soon will be) a professional fitting kit available from TomTom that allows you to do a permanent installation not utilising the cigarette lighter. It supports mute of a (suitably equipped) radio also.
Check the TomTom website |

Interesting. Thanks for that.
I checked the site but can't find any info on this. Do you have a direct link? |

There's not much on the site, admittedly. But if you search for accessories for TomTom GO, you'll find this little snippet:
TomTom GO - Professional Docking KIT
TomTom GO Professional docking kit for direct connection to your car power supply and audio system will be available at the end of year 2004. |

There is a posting on this forum for professional docking kit - it's a dutch document and shows an rrp of 249 euros! (ouch!)

There has also been much discussion on a diy charger, which started after a number of GOs were fried by faulty in-car chargers. The thing to note here is that the GO requires a 5v supply - so you MUST NOT wire it up to your car battery directly - else the smoke will leak out of your GO! |
