Once I had Android Auto enabled on my car, I stopped using the Garmin (never had any trouble with sound) and use Waze. Just speak your destination and Waze finds it.

I loaded a map of Australia onto the Garmin when I visited my daughter there last year, but the hire car had Android Auto. So even as a back up it was redundant.

Maybe this isn't the answer you were looking for, but that's what current practice looks like.
