Folks,

customized voices work, just not as you may expect it. AFAIK nobody managed yet to extract the OGG files from the dataxx.chk files. I think this is because the current version of the vif tool has the german voice offsets hard coded.

But the vif tool can actually pack existing (working) OGG files into a new dataxx.chk file, and the GO can recognize this.

I took my good old TTN2 USAC wav files, converted them with oggenc, and then packed them with the viftool. Now the GO doesn't annoy me any more with these redundant "After" messages...

Does anyone have the correct list of words?

I've translated this from the German, it's close but I know it's not 100% right. Without being able to hear the original OGG files it's hard to remember what the phrases are in every situation. Any help appreciated:

Simply use the old TomTom Nav 2 or 3 voices - the only file name change is "charge.wav" instead of "congestioncharge.wav" . Then use OggEnc, and the the viftool

Just for interest - it looks like Tom Tom used this site to make their "Sheila" (Aussie) and "Zappa" (Valley Girl) voices...

Amongst other things - there is a Scottish Female voice (yaaay) and a Hispanic American One (in English).

You type in the phrases - say as in "Turn aaraound as soon as possible" and the free demo either plays them or downloads them as a .wav

Awesome work on this by the way....

Thanks for a fascinating read.

I don't think so. The TomTom voices sound like professional takes from a real person in a sound studio.

True, but they are not from TomTom

Several enthusiastic users have had the same idea, and provided alternatives that can be found here:

They are def. generated voices, not real-life.

TomTom have my alternative voice-files who I produced for TT2 and 3 and this is the same for GO...

It's the "Norsk Female". (Norwegian)

This is the voice of my wife (Gry) and she is absolutely Real... :D

What recording equipment did you use, and what kind of post processing?

Just my PC but with a good microphone.

To edit the files I use Sony Sound Forge 7.0

I save the files with these data:

Normalize to -6dB
Blank part to beginning and end (approximately 80ms)
Uncompressed
Sample rate: 22 050 Hz
Bit-depth: 16 bit
Channels: Mono

These files have been available for TT2 and 3 and a lot of the Norwegian TomTom-users use this alternative. I have also made Norwegian menus for TomTom 3, and the same voice for CheckPOInt.

They can download all of this as a complete self-installing package

I sent the files to TomTom for about a year ago, and now they made the GO package... :D

As I have told, TomTom put my voices for download from their web site for TT GO.

After download and unzip the alternative voice for GO you find this folder:

ttngo_altvoice_Norsk_Gry / voice / addon

In the folder "addon" I find tree files:

addon.vif
data97.chk
readme.txt

Can I just put the "addon.vif" and "data97.chk" into the memorycard on theese devices:

TomTom Mobile
TomTom HP NavPack (TomTom 2004)

Will it work ???

Im not in a position to test this myself... (I do not own Mobile, NavPack or GO myself)

Thanks Lutz! :D

I will put it on my Forum to get someone to try it out...

I will post my experience in this here and on the Mobile and HP NavPack forum later, together with a "how to do".

I forgot to ask about Palm, so here we go:
...will it be the same for Palm?
