A BMW driver who parked in front of a speed camera van with his boot opened to obscure its view has received a police warning.
Chris Welford, 23, who says that motorists beeped to thank him, got a ticket at the same spot - Marske Road in Skelton-in-Cleveland, North Yorks - five years ago.
Cleveland police officers visited Welford at his home to warn him that he could have been taken to court. They branded him "irresponsible".
A police spokesman argued for the effectiveness of speed cameras: "It's an unpleasant sight to come across the severed limbs of victims and then take on the task of informing families of these victims that their loved one is in a serious condition in hospital – or even worse. Those who don't agree with speed enforcement will no doubt speed themselves."
He added: "Most members of the community don't want the safety of their children put at risk by the drivers of speeding vehicles."
Welford commented: "I have had loads of messages of support, but quite a few telling me I am an idiot. I know that some speed cameras are just there to catch people out and make money but they can be a deterrent and people get killed from speeding.'

living a few miles away from this incident which happened mid 2016 the better photo to use would have been the one in local paper of the BMW with its rear door up blocking the cameras view.. amusing as it was, it was a little silly.... this area has a problem with arrogant speeding drivers and anything to deter them is a help not a hindrance |
