|
|
Hi everyone, I've been reading this excellent forum from 'outside' the site for some time, and only recently signed up.
I've got a MINI-badged Garmin Nuvi 2497, bought from the MINI dealer where I bought the car two years ago.
I've never had any problem with the updates until this morning. The unit was connected to my PC at 8.30 and the update started, GE saying there were 3 hours 39 mins to go. The time later dropped to just over 2 hours, went back up to 3 hours, then down to 1 hour 48 minutes, and that's where it is stuck. I've lost track of how long for, but at least an hour or so and far too long in my opinion. It's now close to midday as I type this.
The only difference with this update is that I opted for the files to be saved to my PC as well because I wanted to try out Basecamp.
Any advice, please?

Hi Sussamb and thank you very much for your reply.
I read that link and have temporarily disabled my antivirus software.
In looking at Task Manager, I can see that Garmin Express does not appear to be doing anything at all.
It's now been 4 hours 15 mins - something should have happened by now?
Sorry if I sound impatient!

If it's taking that long and unless you have a slow internet connection something is wrong. I suggest you start again, Express should pick up where it left off. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Thank you. When you say start again, what exactly do I do? |

Ok, so I bit the bullet and exited GE. Restarted it, got the option of reinstalling the map to the nav, clicked that, 1 hour 27 minutes to go. Not sure I'm going to have any nails left by then... |

That's what he meant by re-starting. |

Thank you, M8TJT.
Didn't mean to sound dense. Have read a few reports of people having problems with updates and bricking the satnav.
Update is currently down to 14 minutes, so might start breathing again soon |

All is now ok. The satnag is alive and well and ready to nag me again.
Thank you to the two gentlemen above for their assistance.

What is reported here sounds rather adjacent to what has happened to me a few times.
I've found on all occasions that you can quite safely exit GE and start again.
Why it throws a wobbly every now and again is a mystery to me.
Looking into the detail what it seems to do is download the latest map and data in small chunks. It then combines these into a few larger files which are copied across to the device.
As long as the small chunks download is deemed to be complete then a second attempt is often considerably shorter.
Shame Garmin don't have a wider pipe. My fibre download is no quicker than ADSL. _________________ DashCam:

If you look at the link I posted Garmin claim that the issue isn't a restriction at their end. I certainly never seem to have an issue, on Virgin Media with a 70 Meg pipe. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

I've never had problems with updates until today, despite only being on 15 Mb ADSL, but I've only ever downloaded to the nav before.
It's a relief to know that it wasn't just me, and that you can exit and restart. |

Been trying to update my Nuvi 2589 since 10am, it stuck at 1 hour 31 minutes. for well over an hour. Disconnected the Nuvi. re-started the computer - tried to start the nuvi and it wouldn't. Put it on a charger and the only signs of life was 'GARMIN' across the screen but this kept flashing on and off and intermittently going brighter.
I've just re-connected Nuvi to PC and started up GE and it appears to have taken up where it left off - now showing copying files and 18 minutes left.
Just hoping this works as I am off to France in 2 weeks for a 2 month caravan tour and don't have time to wait for a repair.
Well, it seems to have worked. Guess the not starting was due to being in the middle of the map updates. |

The one thing not to do IMO is to disconnect the Nuvi mid stream although you have got away with it.
I've always stopped GE but left the Nuvi connected. Never had any issues when I restart GE.
I did notice that there is also a set of logfiles in C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Downloads\ but with the one from last week being close to 1Mb I lost interest as it was massive, presumably because of the looping till I stopped GE.
My 2p would be for Garmin to change GE to give more control:
1) Download the new map to a location of your choice.
2) Once downloaded and verified then another button to build and load the map files. _________________ DashCam:
