From your last statement I assume that you're not running the unit with the fag socket TA cable but the USB cable?

If so that may, more than likely, be your issue.

The Garmin, via USB, can't decide whether it's plugged into a PC or a car.

I had a similar issue many years ago with a Garmin 50 where it would flick between the map screen and the 'computer connected' screen.

I thought by using USB I could use a shorter, neater cable.

Agreed. Nuvis are meant to use the supplied power cable, not a USB cable, when being used to navigate.

Very strange indeed. As a test have you tried operating it with no power lead? I'm not sure what the battery life is but given how quickly it shows problems maybe something to try?

My Honda has deep power sockets. I Have a few USB ciggy socket adapters, some work, some don't for exactly the same depth reason.

I've semi-hardwired my Garmin by wiring in a female power socket to the fusebox. The female socket isn't as deep as the centre console ones so isn't causing issues.

Apparently they have this problem with other models which they have sorted out with a software update which I already have. They didn't know about the 2699 until my problems, I was also told that on other models if you saved your route to your favourites it seems to work fine, ( I haven't tried this yet )

Routes aren't saved to favourites, in fact you can't save routes on that model as it uses trips. Trips are saved in the Trip Planner app. So what you've been told is confusing.

I've not heard of your issue with any Garmin model, not on any forum. Can you recall exactly what they said?

I get something similar, mine works fine on the Garmin supplied power adapter but will not run on battery or USB for any length of time.

Is this normal?

Perfectly normal. Battery life varies but you should get an hour or so. The USB cable is meant for charging and connection to PC, not for operating the device.
