I think it's a hardware issue, but I'd like some confirmation:
When I plug my 2599 into a PC USB port, all I get in the screen is "this cable is not compatible with the traffic" or something similar and it never goes into the "Garmin Express" mode so I can update maps, routes etc.
I have tried different cables including the official Garmin one. No difference.
Anyone seen this before? It used to work until about 3-4 weeks ago.
Anything I can try?

i have a plethora of cables and the only one that i use with my 2599 which doesn't get that same message is the original cable which was supplied by garmin. there is clearly something unique about it.
firstly i would try different usb ports and even different pc's if possible but if that doesn't work, and unless the garmin gurus says differently, I'd go to the garmin support page, explain your problem and order a new one based upon their advice. i wouldn't bother with other sources, I've seen too many cables which don't work as expected. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

I agree. You need a new cable. Phone Garmin. ... explain the issue. I've known them send replacements FOC. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

I don't
The PC connection mini USB is unimportant. I'm using my Canon camera one for my updates.
The only time it matters is in the car where you do need the TA traffic cable.
Sounds to me like the unit is not recognising that it is connected to a PC but thinks it's in the car.
My next check would be to try another mini USB cable and/or another PC.
ps: Try another USB port on the PC. _________________ Satnav:

Interesting.
Different PC, different cable, no issues. Works in USB2 and USB3 ports.
Oh well, at least my Garmin is OK
Cheers

So if you've only tested the 2 in tandem I don't suppose whether you know if it's the PC or cable.
My money's on the PC, something odd with USB.
My guess is that the PC has reserved a drive letter for something else and the Garmin isn't what it's expecting so it doesn't 'plug & play' and give you the double bong.
Even when it's not in mass storage mode that can be an issue.
Try a USB flash drive to see if that gets recognised. _________________ Satnav:

Isn't there a connection setting in the Garmin? Just had a look and couldn't find it but I'm certain that I changed the USB mode in the past. But perhaps I am dreaming. |

Yes, you can switch between Mass Storage and the default protected mode.
In mass storage the device shows up as a new drive letter and in protected mode it shows as a 'device'.
Both methods give the 'bing bong' (technical term) when identified.
I'm still wondering if this is just the Garmin or other USB devices plugged into the same port. _________________ Satnav:

It's something about the laptop.
Same cable in my desktop machine - no issues. In the laptop, no joy - in any of the three USB ports.
Other devices work OK (such as USB sticks, a USB to ethernet dongle or a Logitech mouse dongle).

I wonder if, at some time in the past, you set the USB Auto Play to do nothing when your Garmin is connected?
Goto Control panel and type 'auto' in the search box.
Just another of my idle thoughts. |

Just checked that - it was set to " Do nothing", but changing it made no difference.

And my 660 connects just fine.
I'm stumped.
How do I change my 2599 from media to the same as the 660? |

Not with my nuvi right now but you need to go into the developer menu. One way to do that is bring up the dashboard and hold the speed icon for around 10 seconds. Now scroll down to MTP Settings and change from auto detect to mass storage mode. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Went into mass storage mode - made no difference. I still get the same error.
There is something about this PC. It's running Windows 8.1 (as are the others) but it has been to Windows 10 and back again. Maybe something is broke!
