I did it on my 2597 not my 2599 hence why it worked for me. _________________ Satnav:

Thanks, that's a change, I'll add it to my 'cut and paste' doc
Can you check for me if this alternative still works or has that changed also?
As an alternative bring up the Nuvi's "trip information" screen by tapping the speed icon, then press and hold the speedometer for about 10 seconds to access the developer screen. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

So WTF are the rest of the default TTS text files as only some of my changes in Serena worked?
@Suss
Trip screen. Press and hold the heading readout just above the speed works.
Opening menus are:
Clear All User Data
Demo Mode
Configuration and Settings
Developer Info
Developer Tests and Tools
Diagnostic Logging.
Anything else whilst I'm at it?
PS. Not going through all of the menus.

I hadn't read Page 2 of this thread when I wrote this - but I've typed it in now, so I may as well leave it here

Is this using the default MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) mode - or mass-storage mode?
If the former, then see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol. Amongst other things, this states:
Code: | It does not support operations such as open, edit and modify. A workaround is to copy to the hosting system for these operations and then copy back.
|
So although Windows Explorer gives the appearance of a 'normal' file-based device, there are some 'smoke and mirrors' at play, behind the scenes. This 'whole-file' approach, is the presumably the reason that 'safe-removal' is not required for MTP devices - new files are created on the device in a temporary area and and renamed to their target location only when complete.
(This gives an odd effect when the target device is low on disk space - you can't update an existing file, unless there is sufficient space for a second, temporary copy of it. I have this problem every week with the PGPSW safety cameras and a nearly full Nüvi 3598)
Perhaps the difference between your working and non-working machines, is the accessibility or otherwise of the "TEMP" directory? (Also check definition of TEMP environment variable).
In addition, have a look in "Devices and Printers" and "Device Manager" to see if you can spot any differences in the way the Nüvi is detected.
For mass-storage mode, it is possible for a device to be set READONLY by Windows. I recently had this occur (for no apparent reason), with a USB-3 external drive. The fix turned out to be to use the DISKPART utility to reset the 'readonly' attribute for the volume. |

Thanks Phil. I suspect what you say was happening. But why it should 'fix itself' on two machines by swapping modes and then back again, who knows?
The temp files was being created in my usename\temp folder somewhere. |
