TomTom has announced that it has signed an agreement with Volkswagen to supply map data to the car maker.
Volkswagen will begin rolling out in-dash navigation systems, using TomTom maps, in Q2 2015 beginning with models in North America. The new in-dash systems will eventually be available in multiple models including Jetta, Passat and Beetle ranges.
"We are delighted to announce this agreement with Volkswagen, strengthening our relationship with one of the world’s premier car manufacturers, and reinforcing our global position as a trusted provider of automotive grade maps”, said Harold Goddijn, CEO of TomTom.

I'm not rich enough to buy a VW, so I guess it's hypothetical. But I wonder if this partnership will address the ongoing situation with built in systems of map update frequency and cost?
The Renault system charges £55 for a single map update and does not offer the TT map 12 month update subscription _________________ Dennis

Volkswagen currently give three years free updates. I believe they are twice a year.
This is the case with my Golf anyway |

TomTom maps are 'updated' every three months and for a PND you can get annual update service for about £45. However, for my built in Renault R-Link TomTom, the most recent map (v937) was only made available (for £55) two months after it was available to PND owners - who are now on the next version (v940) and the next version (v945) is likely to become available before the Renault 940 is released at extortion price. (v940 issued to PND users mid November, v937 for Renault users updated 8 Jan 2015). _________________ Dennis
