13,000 speeding motorists have been caught by average speed cameras in two years on a stretch of roadworks on the A23 in Sussex - one of the county's busiest roads.
But one hapless company car driver was caught thirteen times in just one month. It is assumed that he lost his license as a result.
The same company car was also recorded speeding on a further two occasions when one of his colleagues was driving.
Sussex Safer Roads Partnership say that in cases where an employer has to respond to issued speeding tickets, they have 28 days grace.
This means it is a possibility, indeed it is likely, that the delay in the driver getting the thirteen tickets allowed him to think he was getting away with it.
The roadworks in question, between Warninglid and Handcross, had a temporary speed limit of 40mph speed limit, but cameras caught some travelling at twice that speed.
One driver managed an average 97 mph through the two and a half mile stretch, but police were unable to trace the vehicle.
Out of the 13,000 driver that were recorded speeding, so far 3,246 individuals have paid the £100 fine and received three licence penalty points and 2,928 have attended a speed awareness course. Drivers who were caught doing between 46mph and 53mph were offered speed awareness courses.
Those caught exceeding 65mph, over 1300 drivers, were taken to, or likely to go to court in the future.

Hmmm - so much for all the assurances that we don't need a tax disc, etc, as ANPR will allow any car or driver breaking the law to be apprehended and brought to justice. Methinks the technology has a way to go yet. _________________ Philip

There could be various reasons why the driver couldn't be traced, the loss of a tax disc isn't one of them _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way.

I think the point that the previous poster was trying to make is that the system that they say will 'replace' the current visible tax disc, does not work in all cases. Not that if there had had been a visible a tax disc he would have been traced.

Well agreed ... but I don't believe anyone has ever stated that the ANPR etc system would work in all cases. People have been getting away with beating speed cameras etc for years, changed number plates, obscured or dirty plates, flip up plates on some motorbikes, unregistered vehicles etc etc.
I just couldn't see the connection between not identifying this speeder and the tax disc removal. If anything the advent of ANPR and other technology has vastly increased identification of those who do break the law, and that includes those who don't tax their vehicles. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way.
