Just got back into the sat nav thing a few months ago and went for a 1005 HD live with lifetime updates rah rah rah.
My issues are, since my last foray, the iq routings are crazy on wednesday i was travelling from Bicester to monmouth and the tomtom wanted to send me up the M40 to the M42 onto the M50 and down you go, when i normally would cut across to Witney area and then the A40 turn off at the A417 (i think it is) across to the M50 picking it up close to Ross, not much time difference but 40 miles more the TomTom way.
Secondly, and i have seen this mentioned with the new 5000 and 6000 units, live services are total crap. In the past google search was brilliant but now the TomTom thing is laughable. Type in Lakeland near Hemel Hempstead and i got sent to a residential street in Kings Langley, perhaps a Mr Lakeland lived there.
The live traffic is always out of action.....well nearly always especially round the M25 region, the revolving wheel just spins all day go bush and the thing improves somewhat.
Back to the IQ routing, perhaps it's the way i have the thing set up but every thirty seconds or so the thing chirps in with a faster route found 1 minute !!! . It is obvious to me that as Tom Tom "progress" forward their products are going backwards, but hey ho what do i know.
GoogleMaps confirms that the TT route is about 5mins faster yet c40miles longer than your preferred route. Presumably, your TT is set up for "Fastest Route".
Pity there isn't a "Most Common Sense Route" setting.
I'm not familiar with the settings on the latest generation TT's but does the option to set a "limited Speed" still exist?
If so and you don't always drive everywhere at 70mph, try entering a limited speed somewhere between 50 - 60 mph. On my older TT's I believe this setting stops me going miles out of the way for the sake of a few minutes.

My old 1005 never seemed to do this it was much more "tolerant". The settings have probably been tweaked as you say and yes i do have the fastest route set up. A common sense setting as you suggested would help. I have to do the same route in the morning and you can guess what option i will take this time,
Does your 1005 HD Live allow you to set a limited speed? It would be interesting to know if doing so cures the problem. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

I dont think it does or at least i can't find anything to set a limited speed.
Further to the Lakeland escapade, i was running around the M25 near the M1 on Monday and typed in lakeland again, returned with one in Barnet in a Tillings road 18 miles away, i thought that seems a lot of miles so i told it to navigate to it and it navigates to tillings road in KILBURN....unbelievable, i just kept going on the M25 towards home. One day i will get to a Lakeland store !!

You CAN set the 1005 to limited speed - have your journey planning settings set to Ask me every time and when you are asked, limited speed is one of the options (I think second page - can't look just now, mine's lying down in a darkened room at the moment).
There's a Lakeland in Bath. But be aware that Bath is so anti drivers that you'd probably never navigate all the obstacles to get there - I use the Park & Ride (free parking and OAP bus pass for the bus).
Yesterday I came home (Keynsham/Bristol) from the M25, below London. TT always gives fastest route as westbound, clockwise to M25 junction 15, then west on M4. My preference is to leave M25 at J12, down M3, then up at the first junction and via Bracknell to M4.
After turning onto M3, my 1005 recalculated for me to return from the first M3 junction, back to M25 - it added originally something like an extra 20 miles to the total. It stayed with that route all the way to the M3 junction and only recalculated via Bracknell when I had refused the turn back onto London-bound M3. It also warned of a lengthy delay when HD traffic picked up an accident just on the return run up the M3 - all in all a longer journey in both distance and time.
Alongside it, I had my GO550 Live, which recalculated via Bracknell as soon as I turned down onto M3.
My built in TomTom, which I had told to avoid that route and use M3/Bracknell, was telling me that the Bracknell route was shorter by about 10 miles and just a couple of minutes.
As for HD Traffic connection... On Monday after "The Great Storm", I was reminded of "The Great Snow" which persuaded TT to reduce their Traffic range to useless and which also caused their system server to fall over - I had no connection all day - just expected it as par for the course!

Congratulations, you won the prize!
By the way, for what it's worth and for all those people who say HD Traffic is the dog's whatsits - By necessity (My new van with HD Traffic built in TomTom is such rubbish I can't trust it) I run two other TTs, making three in all, each with HD Traffic. I find that :-
Firstly, all three units seem to get their traffic updates at different times (if/when they do) and I'm not just saying a couple of minutes.
Secondly, they often disagree - the other day one gave warning of a 75 minute traffic jam for half an hour whilst the other two respectively reported 1 minute and 30 minutes.
So which unit have you got which guides you through the traffic??? I saw a post on another forum the other day in which a driver claimed that HD Traffic had saved him far more than its cost plus loads of time and fuel. I wonder whether he was avoiding the 1, 30 or 75 minutes? Did he need to and how did he calculate his savings? _________________ Dennis

Dennis, If you'd written this yesterday it would've saved me £26! After spending an hour sat in traffic on M61 I decided to bite the bullet & renew HD Traffic, I'm hoping it has improved since I last had it, but by the sound of it that doesn't sound very likely. _________________ Galaxy Note 4 / TomTom GO : CamerAlert : CoPilot

Sorry Ian, I didn't know you were on the brink of decision.
However, for 50p a week, I don't think you've lost a lot and who knows, it could work well for you.
To be honest, I always have Radio 5 Live on all the time, and I find that often just as good, but not so wide ranging. Sadly at the moment, my built in unit has gone worse - it went in this morning for them to fix - "Ten minutes, sir" - my handsfree connection which died when I upgraded my iPhone to iOS 7. It came back after two hours, not fixed, replacement of the entire unit on order from manufacturer, but with no sound from either satnav or radio! (I told them six weeks ago the unit was faulty and needed replacing - GRRRR!). _________________ Dennis
Comparing with the Lakeland web site, PGPSW appear to have around two thirds of the Lakeland shops on the database, so it's bound to be better than TomTom's offering.
If the one you want isn't there, then you can always add it later to improve the PGPSW database even further (or with only around 20 missing, there's a small project for somebody!)
... and also from the Lakeland web site, a very unscientific scan shows that your nearest shop to Hemel may be in Watford! _________________ Garmin DriveSmart 50 LMT-D
Thanks everyone, i have sorted my things with Lakeland, i had checked their stores online but like Dennis i have no idea exactly where i'll be from one day to another so when i get a bit of time returning from somewhere i tried to find a store near to where i was, and thanks for the info with speed limitation i am off to look at it now.

I don't know about anybody else, but I'm gagging to know why the obsession with Lakeland?? I mean, it's a nice shop and Vera keeps buying occasional stuff there, but even she doesn't have an urge to find one wherever we travel.
Oh, and for chuckles, you should have seen my 1005 when I came back from Glasgow last night - with overnight closures of M5 at Bristol, the thing was re-routing me every five minutes, adding and reducing miles and minutes every time (and not asking my permission either)! The other two Live devices settled for simply running me up against the closure when I told them not to re-route - the matrix signs said absolutely nothing in advance, until I was within 30 miles of it, so I didn't believe them when (at different times over half an hour) they told me a closed road was on my route. Difficult to believe, I know, but this was the first time I've known TT to beat the overhead matrixes! _________________ Dennis
I had to return an item for she who must be obeyed and trying to do that whilst never knowing where i will be going to negates the sensible option of pre-planning.
What you described there Dennis is a great example of what i am finding with the live services, maybe i am mistaken but my old 1005 seemed a tad more docile when chirping in with the re-routes.
there's an "eco route" setting... That's supposed to be a cross between 'fastest' and 'shortest'.
That sounds like it should do the trick. Do you know if it does? _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599
