Good news! The POI submission page has finally had its long waited (and to be honest, long overdue) overhaul. The main reason for the change is that Google will soon be stopping supporting the now older 'v2' maps API that we previously used. Instead of just updating the submission map to support the latest 'v3' maps API we decided to give it a considerable overhaul. The process should now be far more streamlined and logical and we have also added a number of new features...
New features include:
- Makes use of your 'default country' option from the speed camera submission page
- Search by address, post code, city or coordinates
- Easy access to our 'coordinates converter' (and you can also send converted coordinates back to the submission page
- Drag and drop the green marker pin
- Click the POI icons to see basic info and quick links to edit or remove a POI
- Clicking 'Accept this location' will update the form with the correct country and international dialling code
- After making a submission you have the option of submitting another POI at the same location or starting afresh
- Various other tweaks to the submission form to improve the overall experience
If you notice any problems with the updated page then please let us know and we'll get it fixed ASAP! |

Thanks Andy
I've been using this version for a while now just to try test it to destruction - so much so that when I went back to the old version it was really hard to follow the process to submit anything...
Hopefully this is now much easier!

Thanks MaFt, looking forward to using it. Submitting with the old version was hard work. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

I rate Quality, over Quantity. Not only for the accuracy of the final data, but in the effort that I have to make to try and achieve that goal. Has anyone read the Submission Guidlines lately?
I, and others apparently, can search the WWW and produce a POI in less than 2 minutes. It can then take me up to 15 minutes to change/reformat the text fields and try to place it accurately. Fortunately that doesn't happen too often, but it can still take longer than the original submission.
I shall now go back, to what is an increasing backlog of submissions (so bear with me if yours hasn't been Activated yet), and spend 3 or 4 hours of my leisure time catching up. _________________ Richard

I did on Tuesday after I read your post! I've always just relied on the notes on the submission page, so apologies if my submissions have caused you grief.
Maybe there could be a link to the guidelines on the submission page? Or maybe it's there already and I've missed it! _________________ Anita

The majority of the text is there (there's some link to the bottom of the page with more info for each process etc) and also in the hover-over info tip thingies.
I've also added a link to the submission page itself.

Those are the bits I'd referred to in the past, but the separate guidelines are a bit more detailed.

Thanks, MaFt. Hopefully the link will cause more people (me included) to read the guidelines before submitting their POIs, and save Richard the hard work of correcting the information. _________________ Anita

Thanks both.
I checked over 300 in the last 6 days - spending some 20 hours in total. In would have been longer but there were a lot of duplicates. Normal would be about 2 minutes apiece with a correctly filled in and located submission.
It's still too easy to use a Postcode, and we know how (in)accurate they can be. In the good old days, when we only had maps that showed roads (and no detail), it was very often only personal knowledge that gave accuracy.
If I can find the correct information on the web, it should be possible for anyone to double check their handiwork, although there are a few that can be troublesome. Tweaking is easy - a full blown search can be onerous.
I'll put my soapbox away, and get on with next lot of 20+ Postcode located POIs. _________________ Richard

I'd like to thank MaFt for updating the code for the page and also Richard for all of his hard work in checking the POIs!
Thanks for processing my submission #266573 (Premier Inn, Southampton, West Quay).
Is there a way of linking to a particular POI, i.e. somebody asks do we have any Premier Inn POIs for Southampton, you can reply with a link to the actual POI that opens up the POI page with the POI in the central of the displayed map?

You can add &Lat=52.12345&Lon=-2.4680 to the URL and that will fire up the map at that location.
I'll see if I can add similar to centre on a specific POI itself. You could always give them the POI ID and use that in the search area.

Since the 24th, up until the time of posting this, I've done 404.
I didn't run out of fingers and toes (I have a full set), in counting how many were accurate, and/or didn't need some editing of the data, in that lot.
Now another 75 have appeared today - but they will have to wait, because I've had enough for 1 week. _________________ Richard

New submission page is great - a huge improvement.
I especially like the "submit another POI in same location" to prevent having to re-find the same location from the UK overview.
Also reacquainted myself with the submission guidelines for tips.

Thanks John. Also, for info, if a user has their default country set to France (for example) then the 'UK overview' becomes a 'France overview'.
