|
|
Sorry I’m not very up to date on current TomTom models but the situation is that I currently have a love/hate relationship with my 750. I use it every day and it directs me around traffic hold-ups several times a week which I love. What I hate is how slow and laggy everything is on it, particularly the downloading of Live traffic data.
My wife is imminently going to need a Live enabled Tomtom as her commute is soon going to change to one where she will very much benefit from traffic data.
So my choice is a) buy a second hand older unit for her or b) buy a newer model for myself and pass my 750 on to her.
So essentially are the current models a significant upgrade over my current 750 in anyway? I’m worried that there seem to be several things that might actually be a downgrade (traffic horizon? access to file system of unit? glossy screen?). Do the current units have something better than GPRS for data download or are they still as slow as hell? Are they significanly better on the processor/RAM front so they don’t take 10 seconds to draw a map overview and traffic summary?
Any advice much appreciated! |

My personal opinion is that NONE of the newer Nav3 devices are any better than your 750 is any way whatsoever, perhaps with the exception of larger screen sizes [some are 5" or 6"] but that is it. _________________ David |

I had a 750, and now have a 1005.
The 1005 has a "google" search type of function which is useful. However, all the other major functionality is the same as the 750.
I was prepared to begrudgingly pay for a new 1005 purely to avoid my growing hatred of the laggy 750. Really annoyed at Tomtom for releasing shuch a pile of cr@p chipset. I mean, who on earth at TomTom tested it, then actually had the temerity to put a tick in the box that says it's passed all the tests!!!! _________________ Tom Tom 1005 v2 World, Garmin Dakota 20, IPhone 4S |

The same Google Search feature is available on the Go950!
Although, for info, it has now been replaced on all units by TomTom's own "TT Local Search" which I've found to be rather inferior. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Yes I know it's a local search, that's why I put the word "google" in quotes and reinforced the positioning by the use of the word "type".
Also, I wasn't trying to say a 1005 is better than a 950, but seeing how you seem to want to think so why (apart from price) would you have a 950 over a 1005? _________________ Tom Tom 1005 v2 World, Garmin Dakota 20, IPhone 4S |

But you did ask a direct question and I had a feeble attempt at answering it |

Yes, yes you did.
Trust me, having had a 720, a 750, and a 1005 all in fairly short order I know the ins and outs of the differences. I was trying to goad a response from the second responder for being a bit of a pedant, is all. _________________ Tom Tom 1005 v2 World, Garmin Dakota 20, IPhone 4S |

Thanks for the input everyone!
Slightly worried you will all descend into further arguments if I point out the 750 I already have does local (and previously Google) searches! |

If I am the "second responder" you seem to be having problems with, then I answered primarily because your first post certainly SEEMED to imply that the Go950 did NOT have the Google (now TT Local) search.
Is correcting that impression being pedantic? I don't, but maybe we'll have to agree to disagree.

From the wording of that sentence it's not entirely clear if you think I prefer the Go950 or the Go1005?
Having a Go940, a Go950 and a Go1005, I actually prefer the Go940 out of all of them for daily use, as I prefer the mount and I use the mp3 player a lot.
But contrary to your earlier assertion, I find both my 940 and the 950 are actually faster than the Go1005 at simple things like reacting to screen presses and switching between menu pages. I find the Go1000/1005 painfully slow in that respect. The Go 1000 and 1005 are known to be rather short on available DRAM to perform all their functions.
I would LIKE to see the NAV3 models succeed, as I think some aspects (such as the pre-calculated fast-routing algorithms, the general shape and the audio quality) are great.
But I cannot currently recommend them due to the long list of features that have been dropped or are still missing from them (as catalogued in that previous post of mine which you may not care about, but which others seem to have found useful, judging by the feedback I've received.

Don't disagree with any of that, even though I've never owned a 9XX I can imagine it to be an accurate comparison with the 1005. I can just about live with the button press delay on the 1005, but only by virtue of not getting any routing or map/instruction refresh delays. When they make something as snappy as the 720 I'll be happy.
I do care about the features that seem/have been dropped from the units, and I really care about some the really shocking device hardware/software performance like the 750 unit.
What I don't care about is taking oneself a little too seriously, I mean it's just a sat nav. Why would I want to exchange harsh words with you, or anyone about it.
Hey M8, they must have snuck that search feature on the 750 after I threw mine in the bin. (It would've still gone in the bin!)
Paul

timmy if you go on tomtom outlet store they are doing refurb tomtom750 for £139.00.
if you enter code TTOUTLET2 at the basket
then this will drop the price to £111.20 and this includes free p&p.
