Have just down loaded the cameralert software
Does it use 3G or any tariff or is it purely sat driven.i do not want the cost of my phone tariff to go up

No data is used. [no need even to have data turned on], It is purely GPS driven.
Take Care

If you have CAmerAlert running in the foreground AND you have maps set to display it will download data for the maps.
From "settings" set the maps to never display and/or run CamerAlert in the background. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

While it's difficult to monitor exactly, even if you do have the maps showing you are probably talking about 2-4MB (megabytes) of data on a 100mile trip.
If you're slowing down and speeding up so the map zoom level changes then it will use a bit more as more tiles need loading.
The best compromise is to set it to 'show maps: near cam' so it uses no data except for the 30-40 seconds while you approach and pass a camera.
In background mode no data is used regardless of map settings.

@MaFt, I reckon that we are guilty of information overload. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599
