Only noticed them today at Asda, Aintree. They are positioned 50m from the road entrance. They are directed at the mini roundabout that directs traffic to the store or petrol pumps. Was driving alone and couldn't take a photo. I will next time out if nobody knows what they are. They didn't appear to be motorised. Anyone?

Sorry, yes, ANPR = Automatic Number Plate Recognition

A lot of petrol stations use these cameras in conjunction with software to shared databases so when a car approaches they check the numberplate to see if they're known thieves and can block the pumps accordingly etc.

More and more supermarkets seem to be using ANPR too but their usage is generally to log what time a vehicle enters and what time it leaves so they can attempt to fine anyone who stays more than 2 hours - i.e. they are parking there all day for work instead of for going shopping.

Ah yes, the horrid DVLA making money scheme. I nearly got caught out in Aberystwyth in a Parking Eye car park. A few minutes late and they wanted hundreds in a threatening tone. Went online and read if I did nothing I would be posted all kinds of threats, but in the end they would stop and do nothing. So I didn't reply to anything and sure enough the letters stopped. No further action. This is normal I'm led to believe, shocked me though with their letterheaded paper looking legit.

those parking 'fines' aren't worth the paper they're written on. basically they can only 'get you' via contract law - you agreed to the contract not to stay more than 2 hours when you entered the car park. breach of contract law means the other party can sue for damages - in this case the damages are pretty much nil - what have they lost by you staying slightly longer than you should? if it's a free car park then they have not lost any revenue, if it's a paid car park then maybe they lost out on what, a couple of £ cos someone else couldn't park?

they can't say that one of the costs is employing the person who patrols the car park either because they are an employee and would be there anyway; the cost involved in their wages is no different whether you overstayed or not.

but anyway, we digress

Almost all can be safely ignored. They may look like official tickets but they are in effect simply rubbish.

Many private car parks use ANPR to log entry/exit times. The system is flawed and even if it was 100% accurate, the fine can almost always be ignored if you stand your ground.
