|
|
Whilst a number of UK councils have reined back on their use of speed cameras due to stringent budget cuts, Nottinghamshire County Council are going against the grain and installing more speed cameras in their jurisdiction.
The new speed cameras are intended to improve safety on one of the county’s busiest roads – the A614.
Over the past five years, this particular road has been the site of numerous accidents. These have resulted in the death of 9 people, 30 serious injuries and almost 250 minor injuries to those involved.
Notts County Council has also introduced a lower speed limit on the targeted stretch of road between the A60 Leapool Roundabout and the A616 Ollerton Roundabout – now limited to 50mph.
Local Councillor Richard Jackson claimed that "Encouraging drivers to travel at a more appropriate speed should drastically reduce the number of accidents on this road".

At least they seem to be putting them where there are quite a few accidents, not just as cash cows. |

Don't wonder, check the map. It appears that they are 'that new' unless they havn't been deployed yet. |

But with the plethora of SOECS cams in Notts, it looks possible that that's what they'll be |

Setting an average speed at 50 means people are drooling along ay 45 and I am constantly try to to overtake. I drive a little slower now but overtake three times as much and get ten times more frustrated.
The road is generally benign. The main things to beware of are the hidden dips. These generally have signs but could be made more striking.
The deaths were pretty much all from overtaking and these measures have just encouraged more overtaking |
