The BBC have launched an interactive map showing every death on the roads over the last 10 years.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15975720
Some sorry statistics there and every death is a personal tragedy for someone's friends and family.
But how well do the locations match with those "safety" cameras, which as we all know are only placed in locations where there is a proven safety problem, NOT just where they are likely to make most money?
I looked at the region around my postcode on the map and couldn't see a single fatality anywhere near where my local cameras are placed ,or a single camera where there has been a fatality.
Am I surprised really? _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Hmm. There are two in Keynsham. The southernmost one, nearest me, is wrongly placed in someone's garden - the A39 is some 3 or 4 miles away. _________________ Dennis

That is quite a sombering, yet quite a useful map.
I agree that the question of the sincerity of speed camera positioning needs to be raised.
I know it is easy to poke holes in the Daily Fail but this article is an example of the problem.
The media and a lot of politicians measure the efficiency of a speed camera in terms of how many people it caught. That attitude needs to be changed. Surely if a speed camera is placed on a road where people used to speed and cause unsafe conditions for fellow drivers and pedestrians, and suddenly noone is speeding and the road is a lot safer, then that camera is doing its job?
The problem is that both the press and the politicians love figures. |
