|
|
Hi,
Firstly I must say that this site has been really handy getting to know the ins and outs of the sat nav world!!! Cheers!!!!
I am currently building a project show car and I am looking to put sav nav in. I currently have a great Pioneer audio system so not really looking for an all in one system!
I want to mount some sort of screen in the dash in place of the vents and central display unit (the dash is from a GM Vauxhall Corsa B) and make up a surround from fibreglass and filler.
The unit would stay in this car only and I wouldn't really need a portable system. Ideally I am looking to mount the screen in the dash with the rest of the gubbins hidden behind the dash.
I'm based in the UK so ideally I would need a UK based system or a system from outside the UK that can be upgraded for the UK road system.
I am not really into "named products" but would want a system thats reliable - I am also open to suggestions for 2nd user gear as I use Ebay quite a lot.
I just don't know which of the systems would meet most of my criteria or which existing systems I should look out for on Ebay.
Cheers for any help or suggestions you guys may have.
Cheers

Are you expecting a system with a big monitor and a DVD drive or rather something smaller , similiar to a Pocket PC with a SD card slot? _________________ Lutz

Hi,
For the screen size I can fit anything from a 3" screen to about 6"
Having looked at some options I could mould the dash to hold a PDA but again being new to this area which one??? But I could also fit a headrest type screen in as well!
Cheers

If you're going to go for a PDA Solution I'd recommend you get one of the newer models that runs WM2003SE and allows Screen Rotation. That way you can mount the PDA Sideways and run the software in landcsape.
Having said that, given that you intend a permanent install I don't think a PDA is the solution, you need to maintain access to sync ports, memory card slots and reset holes etc which will be an issue. Why not build a car PC hidden in a glovebox or under the seat and connect it to one of those excellent 6" touch screenVGA displays. There are many software projects around and you would then have a full PC, MP3, DVD and WLAN possibly etc, see http://www.thisstrife.com/carproject/ for an example and links to more resources. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hi
Just had a thought - if I want to install a permanent screen are there any PDA's which will drive a separate screen - if so which spec screen???
Cheers

The XDAII or it's variants have a backpack accessory option which has an extended battery, CF Slot and VGA out. There are also CF Cards that offer VGA output but I know of no PocketPC that offers this natively. _________________ Darren Griffin |
