Hi,
Can't find any reference in the forums to this question - I can't think I am the first to come up with this suggestion for the PGPS team.... As the only thing to change on a weekly basis is the ov2 database, could this database be available to download without the icon files attached. Simple to get rid of I know, but there must be others who for various reasons do not require, or do not want to transfer the complete download to their SatNavs. An ov2 file only download would make things simpler and quicker. |

Personally, I would says the pros for the current system far outweigh any cons. The files are so small that they don't really make a difference in download time. Also, when copying to your device you can either just select the ov2 files or copy the lot. Again, the difference in time taken is minimal.
On top of that, from a support side it's easier offering a small number of download options. There's already enough decisions that have to be made without adding extra ones that don't matter overall.

I see where you are coming from... but here's another side to it...
in the last few weeks there was a new category added to the database (UK Specs Variable).
If the icons weren't automatically downloaded as well, we would have had loads of people complaining that they were getting "red squares" instead of the proper icon for that category. Downloading the full set at least means we can be sure no-one is missing anything.
Also, there will always be the various text files giving copyright and version information, so people may or may not want to exclude those from what they actually yransfer to the device every week. That's just the same process as removing the icons.
From where you said "Simple to get rid of I know...", I guess you're aware that it's easy to just sort the unzipped download "by type", by clicking in the column heading.
It's then easy to select just the block of data files you want and ignore the rest. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Hi,
Many thanks for both replies received.
As an avid Photoshop user, I have in the past played around with various styles of bitmap icons for the SatNav. I will load them on the old TomTom, obviously attaching them to the PWGPSW ov2 files, before deciding if they are worth keeping or reverting to the excellent set from Gerry.
I am sure if I experiment, many others will to, probably having various differing icons on their SatNavs. This was the reason behind my thoughts of an ov2 only download.
The point from Andy P of an update to the database being missed is a valid one - in fact because I don't install the bitmap icons each week from the download, I have missed the mentioned one myself. Will have to fire up Photoshop once again and get one on.
Nice to see people reply to questions and queries on PWGPSW forums. Other sites I have visited, contributors are sometimes ignored. Cheers |

Hi drew, the majority of our users are, generally, not very computer literate (no offence intended). As such we need to make things as simple as possible for the majority.
If you're slightly computer-savvy then it is a simple process to simply de-select (or not even select in the first place) the files that you don't want - but for us to try and explain that to others can be a real pain...!
As such, we won't be adding a separate download option of 'icons/no icons' etc.

Hi MaFt,
Obviously, through posts - feedback - queries, you know the PGPSW users, and their abilities better than I do.
Just thought I would ask the question re. ov2 only downloads, and I think you and your collegues have answered my question satisfactorily.
As it's taking me longer to write these posts that split ov2 and bitmap files, I think the subject has now been exhausted.
Regards
Drew |

If you're a Windows user then it is easy enough to 'sort/view by file type' or 'sort/view by extension' - this will group all the ov2's together for simple selection so you don't need to manually click each one..
