MyGuide 4328 Crashed. Help a puter Numpty please!

I've had a MyGuide 4328 since January. I knew it was cheap & unsupported, but I'd read about IGO8 on here and liked the sound of it. The sat nav had a poorly battery due to long storage, but once replaced it loaded faster and I liked it. Postcode recognition not as good as TT etc. but using it for touring abroad and making routes on the 'plan on map' feature was great - my Tom Tom & Garmin riding mates were well impressed with the thing. That is, until it died.

The thing starts and loads unitl it gets to the heading on screen 'GPSDATA CTOR' and then it just stops there. So, although I'm no puter genius I reckon the software or .exe file is corrupted maybe (i.e. there's a software prob rather than hardware?). You can press reset all you like but it just goes back to the same place.

I'd love some help to resurrect the thing.... but please remember youre responding to someone who'd need very clear step-by-step instructions if i had to amend a file or something (I can find the folders and files when connected to my pc etc.).

has anyone come across this before? Any chance my MyGuide can live again? Thanks all.

That loding statement seems to come just before MAINSCREEN LOADING, but happens so fast on mine that I can't be absolutely certain. Not that knowing where it is failing helps the repair much

Sonds possible that one of the files used by iGO is missing or corrupt.

Have you got any kind of installation disk, or did you take the precaution of copying all the files from the device to your PC when you first got it?
If so, just copy all of the files back on to the unit and try a restart.

I'm afraid that I wasn't bright enough to copy all the files, and it didn't come with any discs . A shame - at 50 quid with 40-odd euro maps and the IGO8 it was a nice unit at a really good price. I used it to tour abroad on my motorcycle and it was doing the job very nicely.

I think you are right about the hang point being shortly after the MAINSCREEN LOAD notice though.

It seems to all go fine and then just stop.... as if the system doesn't know what to do after getting to the 'GPSDATA CTOR' point. So, I suppose whatever is meant to come right after 'GPSDATA CTOR' is perhaps the missing bit?

If all else fails, can I use the device to load new software etc? I dare say though that the costs and hassle of doing so would nake it cheaper to get another PND?

I must admit that, while it wasn't perfect, I rather like the IGO8 system. I've read on here that there are reasonably priced Takara (and quite likely others I don't know of) PND's that use a later Sirf GPS reciever and later maps that the 2008 ones my 4328 came with. Perhaps if my poor myGuide is doomed, then this would be the way to go to be able to stick with IGO8?

(I'd be pretty happy to get the 4328 working though ideally!)
In case the old reset button isn't enough (clutching at straws here) I'm going to have the battery out of it for a few minutes tonight and see if that helps reset it - it's worked on phones and other gadgets before.

Providing you don't want a questionable value HD Traffic or Twitter on your PND , you could do a lot worse than sticking with iGO. Almost anythinig else is worse with regard to customisation, routing, via points, itineries etc. Battery out for 1/2 an hour sounds like a good idea to me, but don't hold your breath that it will fix it. But come back and tell us anyway. There are other ways and means that may help you.
What version iGO 8 is it using? Menu-Settings-About or similar.

As another alternative, and as you have only had it since January, had you thought of returning it as faulty.

You were right M8TJT - taking the battery out didn't really help. I did operate the reset a few times, and got the thing to acknowledge it didnt load properly once, so it asked me to reset the language and voice before starting to load. However, it still wouldn't actually get to boot up all the way.

As for the version - well, as I can't get to the menu on the device, I can't find out. I did scroll through the files on the device with it connected to the PC, but couldn't find anything I could read to find out the IGO version. All I know is that it is Version 8, and the whole device was configured in 2008.

There is a 'Crash Log' text file on there with lots of info I don't understand. however it mentions the phrase:
'WinCE CallStack snapshot (function names unknown - map file \My Flash Disk\MyGuide\myguide.map not found):'

All the maps were loaded 13 August 2008.

In the LICENSE folder it lists a file:
MyGuide_PNA_FEU7PPC@0804_(RUS,_TA_only)_2008-08-21_MG4328.lic

There is a GPSPARA folder (I note GPSPARA comes up on the screen RH lower corner during boot-up, and it has hung on this on a restart before) - there is an orginal 2003 file called 'gpspara1.bin', but there are 2011 versions in the folder called gpspara0.bin, gpspara2.bin and gpspara3.bin

Of course, none of this means anything to me !

I dare say a clever 'puter boffin would be able to have a good go at it, but I'm getting the idea it may be a bit beyond my very limited skills.

M8TJT - yes I have thought about returning it. I bought it from CPC Farnell the electronics co. But.... the OE car-type batt charger died before my trip to Europe, and the handbook says not to use anything else or it'll invalidate the warranty. I got another 12v Mini-Usb charger the day before I left, so that I could use the thing, and think i must have binned the original.

I've also changed the battery (and of course you aren't supposed to open it). Foolishly maybe I gambled that a new battery and I might well have a trouble free PND for at least a year or 2. Ah well.

So - I could send it back and likely get told I've no warranty anyway, so thought it was worth a little effort to try and revive it. I can always send them an email (I have the Invoice) and see what they say though. Thanks again.

I've tried so many things. No Luck.

Tried clearing some space on the card as it was really full.

There is an archive called data.zip which looks like it is the setting for Windows CE which would reset the startup procedure but can't find out where to unzip this archive. Installed Windows Mobile Device Centre to see under the hood but this isn't compatible.

I don't have an old Windows XP computer to install the old ActiveSync software but suspect this won't help.
