Pardon the TomTom newbie question but: what is the purpose of this file? |

This file contains the UK PostCode data and is supplied to match the latest maps that have just been released, for some reason TomTom Home is incapable of updating these files so you have to do it yourself - Mike |

As I have a Via Live 120 and MyTomTom I'm guessing I won't be able to do this? Ho hum. |

Unless the newer "MyTomTom" interface does the update for you its not going to happen, ironic thing about MyTomTom is that it never informs you as to what it's doing so you will never know if the postcode data gets changed - Mike |

As a relatively newbie to TomTom I'm slightly confused here.
I have a 1005 Live European device and have just updated to Map V875. I've had my machine for about 9 months and have received about three map upgrades to date. Are you saying that the Post Codes need to be upgraded seperately? If so how? I cannot find any option within the My TomTom application for updating post codes.

Situation is as per the previous answer.
On older TomToms (the ones that that use the "Home" utility program), the user is also able to use Windows Explorer or the Mac's Finder to add files to the device manually, so it is an easy matter to update the postcodes once the files are available.
But for some reason, TomTom have never seen the importance of doing this, and think the user should be happy to remain with the original postcode files that were on the machine when purchased.
---------------
On the newer models which use the "MyTomTom" interface, you cannot manipulate files in the same way, and therefore the postcodes cannot currently be updated by the user.
Also on these models it is impossible for the user to discover if the postcodes have been updated automatically when a new map is installed.
But from previous experience they NEVER HAVE BEEN before, so it is unlikely that they are now.
If (like everyone else) you don't like the situation, may I suggest a call to their customer services asking how they are going to rectify the situation? _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Can you tell me were to install the post code file? is the same as installing poi's, and I take it there is little point in installing the Singapore ones. |

They go into a Folder called zip, in the Root of the Device. _________________ Richard

No, it's not the same as installing POIs.
You need to unzip the downloaded archive file (on windows PCs this is done by right clicking on the file and selecting "extract all").
That will produce a FOLDER called "zip" containing several files.
That entire folder goes on the root of the TomTom (i.e. not inside any other folder).
In all probability there will already be a folder called "zip" containing the old versions of the files, so Windows will ask if you want to replace the old files with the newer versions.
You COULD leave off the Singapore files, but they are so tiny, it won't really make any difference to leave the folder contents intact.
EDIT: Sorry Oldboy, I didn't see you'd already answered. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

OK thats great, just a couple more questions, do I copy and paste them one at a time (like a poi) and does it make any difference what map you have installed. I have a 520 with the latest map update on it and also a xxl with 860 maps, will they both benefit from the new postcode installation. |

Similar situation, and cannot directly answer your question, except to say that I put several postcodes in for the following days travel the evening before my update, and two or three of them reported impossible route errors the next day following my morning map update
Entering the postcodes again solved the issue
So I ASSUMED from this that postcodes were included and indeed updated
But, alas, they was just guess work. They worked, I was happy. Time will tell! _________________ TomTom Go Live 6100, 600

As mike says, you can copy and paste all the files in one go (or copy and paste the entire folder if you prefer - Windows will realise there is already an existing folder of the same name and ask if you want to replace the contents).
But I'm a bit confused by that statement about POIs... Who says you have to copy and paste POI files one at a time????
On an old-style TomTom like yours, using Windows Explorer you can copy and paste whole blocks of files (POIs or anything else) to the TT in one go.
Even on the new models that use the new 'MyTomTom' interface (and cannot use Windows Explorer), MyTT allows you to click and drag to select several files at once now. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |
