What a load of.
If 150,000 were having accidents as a result of this so called eta racing then it would have been all over the news. Probably would even have parlement having discussions about how to curb it.
7.2 million people actually practice eta racing.
Where on earth have they imagined these numbers from.
FACT. even if you drive at the speed limit you have a chance of beating the eta as satnavs are often conservative with their estimates. _________________ Dom

My satnav appears to continually update its ETA during the course of a journey, so it would be hard to beat. _________________ Drivelux |

Also, the eta changes with speed & traffic conditions so they'd have to make a note of the eta before starting to drive - I find it very hard to believe that there are 7.2 million drivers doing this on a regular basis |

Looking at the author of this article (John-Paul Ford Rojas) and his publication history http://journalisted.com/johnpaul-ford-rojas it appears to me he may be getting desperate for work.
I agree with others, above, this "story" is just puff _________________ HUAWEI P30 Pro (new edition) with Speedtrap Alert & alcatel1 for SatNav

Every segment of road has a time to travel (even without the IQ Routing), and this is based on the worst case scenario: Right turn takes longer than a left turn (in the UK); traffic lights turns to red as you approach; roundabouts, pedestrian crossings, etc.
It used to hold true that on a Motorway/Dual carriageway, with a National Speed Limit of 70mph, the ETA could be maintained at 62mph.
Built-up 30mph roads appear to work out at about 23-25mph. I can 'gain' 4 minutes going through my home village, about 2 miles, but a Level Crossing also comes into the equation. If the LC gates are down, I lose out. _________________ Richard

Try driving through the night on a long distance trip with cruse control set to 62 MPH and you will get to your destination on time using a TomTom, I am not too sure if this is the exact speed used but its damn close. You are lucky to average 62 MPH during the day on a long distance run but it is possible from time to time and, certainly possible through the night.
Travel at the legal limit and you will beat the ETA first offered by the device without speeding, the longer the trip the more you will arrive ahead of the ETA assuming you can sustain the legal speed limit along with the assumption that conditions dictate the road conditions and prevailing weather make it safe to travel at the posted speed limit.
It is possible to beat the nav device ETA by well over an hour depending upon the time of day, weather, traffic and time of day if the trip is long enough, but you have to keep the speed up whilst remaining safe, Kinloss to St Mawgan being a trip many people involved in military aviation will have made in the past. Its a long haul even with a single stop you can beat the offered NAV ETA by 90 minutes without any form of competition involving a GPS device.
The article in the Telegraph is ill informed and full of holes combined with a lack of facts, total rubbish IMHO - Mike |

I always beat my TT's eta's. My SatNavs have been set with a max speed of 95km/h and I normally drive on the motorways at between 100-110km/h. This allows me to drive sedately, stop for fuel and still have time for a coffee before I catch a ferry or a flight. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

Like others here I can say that 'beating' the ETA isn't a problem.
One thing I'd like to say is that since using PND I probably travel at the legal speed limit far more often and don't feel the need to travel at great speed.
Now I can guarantee that for most 1-2 hour journeys and keeping to the speed limits the ETA can be bettered by 10-15 minutes.
So I agree with others here this article is a pile of poo. |

Sat Nav users seem to be fair game for journalists. We are either inadequate little nerks who are too frightened to disobey our devices even when the road signs say otherwise, or we are sociopaths using our satnavs for real-life electronic gaming without consideration for the well-being of other road users.
Where did they dig up these statistics? From the Newsroom staff perhaps? _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]
