Can I put (move) a map update to an SD card which has more space than the Sat Nav device itself (Nuvi 265W)?

You can't move it yourself. What you can do is download a map update, or part of it, onto a SD card, once you've done that the card will be locked to your device. You don't say which maps or mapset you're trying to update, you don't say either whether you've taken any steps to free up space on your nuvi, as there are generally a lot of unwanted files (eg help files in different languages) that most of us will never need so can be safely removed.

Perhaps you could post back with some more info on exactly what it is you're having problems with?

I have a Nuvi 265W which I have previously used in Portugal as well as at home in the UK. I have signed up for lifetime updates. When I download an update, during the process I am asked what areas I want to install, I would like to select all (Europe) but even selecting Western Europe, I get a message to say I don't have enough memory to do this. I am not an expert but I have removed voice files, vehicle icon files and anything I don't think is relevant but I still get the lack of memory messages, I can put the UK maps on fine.
I believe that the unit has a 2Gb memory but I have a spare 4Gb SD card which I could use - if I knew how

You can also remove all the other help files, the EULA files and the keyboard files that you don't need.

If you still don't have enough room then what I would do is put the UK maps onto the nuvi, and the remainder of Europe on the SD card. When you attempt to download the update you get the options of which part of the mapset you want to download and where you want to download it to.

Note that you can't put the whole mapset on the card as the nuvi needs to see a valid mapset in its internal memory when it boots up.

To do this when you download the map update, if you look at the 6 blue dots along the bottom part of the Downloader program windows, the Install Options button, which is what you want, is in the bottom left corner of the page that has the 4th dot highlighted.

It has taken a bit of time to do all this.

Didn't work, the Sat Nav with the SD card inserted just reboots continuously. I couldn't use the latest Installer as it doesn't allow me change the defaault installation location (which isn't the SD card). I downloaded MapInstall and used that, it appeared to work but as I say endless reboots.

Could I completely re-format the Sat Nav and SD card and start again?

I wouldn't. As I'm not sure what you've done can you answer a few questions.

Does it work without the SD card? The card also has to be formatted as FAT32, did you do that? The maps files on the card need to be in a folder called Map, are they?

Yes, it works fine without the SD card, UK maps only.

The card is formatted as FAT32.

There is no 'map' folder, the files all seem to e in a folder called garmin.

Thanks for all your help

Garmin folder is correct, my bad, it's the newer models where they need to be in a Map folder.

What files do you have in the Garmin folder (the one on the SD card)? name of files and their size please.

What's happening indicates a corrupt map file.

There are 2 files in the garmin folder on the SD card

a611d619-3607-4d3f-95d0-f9b01e010a0d.gma 3Kb
gmapsupp 1,286,272Kb

I did re-format the SD card last night and re-installed the additional maps onto the SD card.
Afterwards I disconnected the SatNav and switched it on, everything appeared fine, I selected a destination in Europe which seemed to work. This morning I plugged it into the car and it calculated the route to the place in Europe - but then it rebooted. It continued to reboot after every 3-4 minutes and even after I took the SD card out it continued to reboot after every 3-4 minutes.

Well that's the correct file name but the way your nuvi is acting makes me think the map file is corrupt. You'll need to try downloading again and see if that fixes it, or call Garmin CS who, if you have your nuvi connected to your PC, can remotely access it and offer advice

You don't need to download the update again. Reformat your SD card and then use Mapinstall to transfer maps from your PC to the card. Make sure that you don't duplicate a tile that is on the Garmin - that might be your problem.

And if you're still having a problem there is a great little tutorial here:

Unless of course the corruption occurred during the original download to the PC?

Sorry I have been away for a few days.

My second problem turned out to be a new power supply, a cigarette lighter splitter with 2 USB and 2 cigarette lighter sockets - I was using a USB cable and switched to a cigarette lighter socket and it was fine.

Thanks for all your help
