How attached are you to your Satmap?

On a recent trip to the Lakes, my Satmap slid off the waist belt of my rucksack when I stopped to take a photo near the top of Great Gable. I then descended to Kirk Fell, and only noticed the Satmap was missing when I got down to the pass between the two.
When I discovered it was missing, two things went through my head;
1) That it would cost me the best part of £400 to replace the unit and mapcard in it, and
2) Cost aside, that little black box had been up a lot of hills with me over the past 3 years, and I felt curiously attached to it, scratched screen, worn buttons and all!!

I headed back up the scree I'd just come down, not really thinking I'd find it again, but after 25 minutes of half-running up the hill, there it was, safe in it's pouch, sitting on a rock waiting for me. A wave of relief spread over me, and not just for the financial loss I'd managed to avert.

Anybody else grown emotionally attached to their little black box, or am I just going a bit soft in the head?!

well since i bought the rubber casing it wont fit into the pouch any longer and it now resides in the pocket of my jacket; but i do get rather het up when i think i have missplaced it

Not sure if I would have gone back up the scree but I am also aware that I seem to be becoming unreasonably attached to the .... device.

A bit like a cantankerous old pet. And yes I did have to spell check cantankerous.

Yup...me too, soft in the head...I'd be gutted to lose it, plus 7 maps on one card...works out an expensive replacement. What are the insurance implications ?

I almost lost mine once when it fell out of the case I bent down. Now I have attached it to the carry case via a carabiner just in case. I'd be lost without it!! he he

I am also attached to mine figuratively, financially and in reality.

I have the unit attached by an additonal cord directly to my rucksack. The cord is long enough so I can use the unit but if I drop it, or it falls out of the case, it will not reach the ground.

I left mine on the boot of the car after putting my mountain bike on the boot rack of my car and then drove home from the car park at Swinley Forest.

When I got home I realised what happened and drove the 7 miles or so back to the car park - but couldn't find it. Then started driving home and spotted it in the middle of the large roundabout that is 200 yards from the car park, and which I come off at the 3rd exit.

It had bounced across the road a few times, had a couple of scratches and needed a new plastic screen protoctor.

Phew!

I thought I was the only one to constantly have it on my person. I once thought I'd left it on a chair at a wedding reception I was working at and I felt sick to my stomach. Luckily it had been gathered into a bag unnoticed and I found it 24 hours later. So relieved.

Mine is always on charge when I'm in the house or working away (~I'm a sound engineer). It lives in my fatigue trousers or on my vehicle mount in my van the rest of the time. I wouldn't consider walking out of the front door without it. Any free time while away is much improved by having the thing to hand, makes a half or day off full of exploring possibilities.

Also very good at distracting toddlers, and utterly dribble-proof to boot ;o)

Glad to know I'm not the only nutter dependent on mt SatSplat...
