I have a new consolidated map card, two 1:25000 maps and full GB 1:50,000 map, and decided to back it up. When I backed up my old cards I used the SD card reader in my computer but my computer does not recognise the card is in the reader. I have checked the reader with a card from my camera and it works ok.

Any suggestions as to why my computer can't see it. Trying to backup via SatSYNC seems to take forever.

Also the unit was upgraded by satmap from 1.42 to 1.5 at the same time it was repaired. Do I need the latest version of SatSYNC to work with v1.5. I currently have SatSYNC 1.42.

Does anyone have any advice please?

I'm surprised you can't read it. I have the UK 1:50,000 and a couple of 1:25,000s on my card along with hundreds of routes and it reads fine in the computer's SD card reader.

Have the contacts become slightly dirty?

Have you got it read protected? Should not make a difference but might be worth a try.

As for the version of SatSync, I am not aware of any problems using 1.5 with an older version of SatSync but why not upgrade SatSync? It might be confused if it finds a version of software on the machine that it has never heard of. If you do upgrade then try looking at the SD card in the A10 through Satsync before once again trying it in the PC.

Not sure if any of that helps but I wish you well.

Thanks for your comments

I haven't done anything with the card since I received it from satmap 2 days ago apart from putting it in my satmap unit, to check all the maps are on it. I have not made it read protected, at least I don't think so as I am not sure how to do this. I can see the maps on the card through SatSync but if I try to export via SatSync (rather than directly from the card) the export seemed to go very slowly so I cancelled it so as to not lock anything up. Perhaps it would be quicker with an upgraded SatSync.

I have yet to put all my routes back on the card as I wanted to take a back up first as a precaution.

If the contacts are dirty what is the best way to clean them please?

The write protect is set by a little slide on the left hand side of the card. If pushed forward it should allow writing to the card if slid back it should prevent writing to the card.

As for cleaning the contacts probably the easiest thing to do is to push it in and out of both the A10 and your computer a few times. If the A10 is reading it so should the computer.

I would recommend that you upgrade SatSync and try copying a small file to the card via SatSync and then back again just to see what happens. Then try it directly with the PC. If it works with SatSync and not with the PC then contact Satmap by phone. If you can't get even SatSync to transfer small files the again ring Satmap.

Good luck.

Hi,

What sizes are the various cards and how old is the card reader?

Cards up to 2GB will be SD and above 4GB must be SDHC. Old SD card readers cannot read SDHCs. Also, "older" card readers may have a practical limit that the larger card sizes weren't available when they (or their drivers) were designed/tested.

Cheers, Alan.

Alan

The memory settings on the A10 shows the card total size is 3.955 G bytes with 1.060 G bytes free

My computer is 3.5 years old with windows XP and service pack2 installed.

The largest satmap card I had before was 0.5 G bytes. I have a 2 gig card for my camera both of which are OK on my computer.

On that basis do you think my computer is just not up to it.

I can export and import a route using SatSync which following previous advice I have upgraded to the latest version. Shame if I can't use the card reader as it is much quicker than Satsync as I wanted to put back on all the saved tracks I remove before sending the A10 back to Satmap for repair.

Hi,

You should probably have Service Pack 3 installed by now (AFAIK it's free) but that (probably) won't affect this problem.

The 4GB card will be SDHC (High Capacity) but all your other cards will be SD and the reader in your PC is quite probably only SD compatible.

However, you can buy a USB-SDHC card reader very cheaply, for example from Poundland or by post from Amazon, 7dayshop.com, etc. and maybe ebay (more risky). I think most are SDHC compatible (and USB2) now, but it's obviously worth looking specifically for SDHC on the packaging/specification.

Cheers, Alan.

Almost certainly SD / SDHC issue. You can get an SDHC reader from amazon for under £2 - I've got one of these : http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000VY80AM/ref=oss_product

Although really, you need a USB2 slot for it which you may not have. It will still work in USB 1 but be a bvit slow.

Thanks for the good advice Alan and Davidor.

Problem is now solved. I went to Poundland today and got a USB card reader for £1. Much cheaper than anywhere else and it did the job as I have just copied all the maps from the new card to my computer.

Much appreciate your help. It's nice to know that there are experts out there willing to share their knowledge.

I have Windows XP SP2 on my computer and had to buy a SDHC Card Reader for a few pounds to enable reading of SDHC cards.

I would urge extreme caution installing Windows XP Service pack 3 on top of Service pack 2. It caused me severe problems some time back which resulted in having to re-install back to my computer's original factory "image". Since then I haven't gone near Windows XP SP3 with a barge pole!!!!!!

I also run a Laptop with Windows 7 and I run my Active10 and Satsync1.5 via this laptop. I'm getting close to thinking about a new Desktop I'm afraid!!
