I recently took a TT map update to my One XL - for the first time it told me that the map had got too big for the 1GB memory in the unit and I would have to pick a part of the map to download (mildly annoying as I have paid for 2 years for the full europe, but lets not go there). So I picked the bit that included France and some other countries and did the download followed by replacing the mapsettings.cfg file. All seemed fine, until I tried to search for a city centre - it then defaults to Austria and locks up and then reboots (repeat ad infinitum) It will go to a stored location in France and navigate fine, but any search for a new location defaults to Austria (which I am assuming wasn't on the section of countries I downloaded). My working theory/guess for the problem is the mapsettings.cfg file and the fact that it applied to a full 1GB complete map of europe when it was written and therefore included Austria (if that's wrong I'm happy to be corrected). I also don't have the cfg file that came with the new map as I over-wrote it when I replaced it (yes, silly, but I hadn't had any issues before) to re-install with the new map.
So, please:
1. Am I facing an installation of a backup (which I have)?
2. If I backup and then do the part map upgrade again is the mapsettings.cfg file the bogey and will I have to start from scratch with a new cfg file and lose all my settings :-(
3. Is there a way round the problem, am I right with what is the problem and does anyone have any other ideas please?
4. The one XL has a SD slot in the bottom - is there anyway I can utilise this to store the complete larger than 1GB Europe map and use my existing CFG file with all my settings - how larger SD card can I/should I use?
I'm open to any ideas - many thanks _________________ TomTom Live 1005 world maps

Try this, its a long shot but I have seen it work and have to admit I was rather shocked:
Connect the device to the PC and start the TomTom Home software.
Use the operate my Go (or whatever its called) function.
On the PC screen emulator of the One XL tap Navigate To/ Address/ Postcode top right should be a flag, if its not a Union Jack clcik it and select the Union Jack from the presented list.
Disconnect from Home and let the device re-boot, see if the issue is resolved.
As for not having the original MapSettings.cfg file don't worry as the map isn't supplied with one! The device creates this file when it first boots up if it doesn't see the MapSettings file in the European map folder. You could try deleting the MapSettings.cfg file from the device and rebooting the unit, any of the above is worth a try before the slow process of a full format and reinstall - Mike

Sounds like it could be a standard incompatible "MapSettings.cfg" problem
So:
1. Am I facing an installation of a backup (which I have)?
Probably not (yet!)
2. If I backup and then do the part map upgrade again is the mapsettings.cfg file the bogey and will I have to start from scratch with a new cfg file and lose all my settings :-(
Probably, The easy way to check is to remove the MapSettings.cfg file that you copied into the new map folder again, let the unit re-boot and it will make a fresh one. Then see if the crashing/freezing goes away.
3. Is there a way round the problem, am I right with what is the problem and does anyone have any other ideas please?
You can often fix it by (with the rogue .cfg file back on the machine) run TT Home, and use the on-screen emulator ("Operate my One") to add a new Favourite (anywhere you like). That re-writes the MapSettings.cfg file to the correct format.
Sometimes that still doesn't work, but it usually does.
(EDIT - or try Mikes alternative above!)
4. The one XL has a SD slot in the bottom - is there anyway I can utilise this to store the complete larger than 1GB Europe map and use my existing CFG file with all my settings - how larger SD card can I/should I use?
Yes. You can put the complete new Europe map on there, but it's a bit of a fiddle to get Home to offer it to you.
The trick is to install your OLD complete Europe map to an SD card, remove any new map zone from the internal meory, check it all works and then connect back to Home, select the SD card slot and ask it to download the new map again. IT SHOULD then offer you the complete map.

Many thanks to both of you - I've got to go away for a couple of days, but I will try the above and report back when I return. _________________ TomTom Live 1005 world maps

Hi there,
Sorry for the delay, but I had to find the time to fiddle with it.
OK, I flumoxed myself my deleting the wrong mapsettings.cfg file which meant I couldn't try some of the above suggestions, so I threw caution to the winds and went for the backup. Now I am back to square one again.
I would like to make use of the old mapsettings.cfg file because if I let it make a new one I am going to lose all my existing info and PGPSW speed camera database settings that I got working more by trial and error than skill and would really not want to work it all out again!
I summise that to use the existing the .cfg file I am going to need the full western europe map on the system again and that if I can get it onto the system the old .cfg file should still work - yes?
I therefore need to implement what Andy_P described and make use of an SD card (will 2GB do? Does it need formatting by the TT?).

I could use some more clues on accomplishing this please. re: Installing the old complete europe map to the SD card. How do I INSTALL this to a SD card, is it more than copying across the directory to an SD card? If so I could certainly make use of some instructions as to how to do this please.
Similarly 'remove any map zone from the internal memory' is this just a case of deleting the appropriate folder/directory from the TT drive or do I need to run some sort of uninstall routine.
Finally, assuming you can get me through the above will TT recognise the SD card once it is installed and default to it for the map, and having got the map on the SD card will TT Home automatically install the bigger map on the SD card or will I need to tell it to - if so how?
Sorry for all the questions - I'm quite prepared to have a bash at doing it and am reasonably IT literate, but would prefer to be doing so with a bit of background knowledge. With many thanks - Julia _________________ TomTom Live 1005 world maps

Get a 4GB card, a 2GB card will not take some of the Europe maps and you don't want to buy one and find it's your map that won't fit again.
Yes, it is a case of copy and paste the Europe map onto the SD card. If it's simpler for you, copy and paste everything to the card.
Yes, it is a case of delete the appropriate folder from the TT. If you've copied everything to the card, you could delete everything from the TT and it'll run from the SD card.
It is entirely possible that the new map will overwrite your previous .cfg file, so make sure you have a spare copy of it before you go ahead. _________________ Dennis

Not a good idea, the device in question is a One XL which can only support SD type cards, it won't work with the SDHC type cards.
If you can find a 4GB SD card then go for it but most cards of 4GB capacity are SDHC and won't work with your device. Have a look for cards made by Trancend or Topram as they both used to supply true SD cards of 4GB capacity that did work with the TomTom's - Mike

Thanks both
DennisN - that sounds more than doable - I'll go shopping with mikealder's advice and see if I can find a plain SD card by one of those manufacturers. It might take a while to locate what I need and have a play, but I will report back with the result once I sort things out. Many thanks _________________ TomTom Live 1005 world maps

Hi Mike,
I'm in a similar position to the original poster.
I've got the opportunity to upgrade the maps FOC for my 750 live.
Do the maps simply load over the original or would I need to use a Micro SD card to load to, as my interal memory is pretty much stuffed
(on order from ebay just in case-..).
How can i configure HOME to download to the extrernal Micro SD & NOT the TT itself pls?
Taking on Dennis' advice lower down (higher up, now) is there any difference in performance between using maps held on the internal memory & those held on an external card?
Something tells me that this question has come up before- but I cannot see it.
Cheers & Thanks upfront

Get a MicroSD card of at least 4GB in capacity, preferably with a speed class of 6 or higher. Your device hasn't got the required amount of memory for the new maps, unless you are happy to use the dumbed down "zonal maps" get the memory card.
Put everything from the 750 on to the card, insert the card to the device and make sure it works with the card inserted.
Pop the card in to a card reader and fire up TomTom Home, update your map with just the MicroSD card in the card reader (Home won't know any difference between a device or memory card assuming you have done the above para).
When its finished pop the card back in to the 750 - Mike

Hi all
OK, I've been on a course, hence the delay in this update.
I've been shopping - Transcend 2GB card purchased (couldn't find a 4GB one). I've copied the old Europe 1GB directory to the brand new SD card (it says Transcend SD 2 GB on it and no mention of HC).
I've put the card in the TT and an icon showing a TT symbol on an SD with a red cross shows with an indication to remove the card.
Does it need formatting for TT - if so how do I accomplish this please?
I'm going to copy back the directory for the moment (it only took 25 minutes to get it on the card in the first place ) _________________ TomTom Live 1005 world maps
