Breadcrumb Plotting not understood

As I'm still very much in learning mode I did a 10 mile walk around Fleet Pond and further in Hampshire today (beautiful sunshine).

I was using the large breadcrumbs to plot the walk as I did it but couldn't understand why they weren't always following the route that I took. In many places it merely showed a straight line (for example across the lake when of course I walked around it).

Would someone offer an explanation please ?

Does it do this if the sat signal is lost under trees ?

Hi,

How were you carrying the GPS? Were you watching it at the time that it wasn't tracking?

The (somewhat directional) internal antenna needs "a good view of the sky". Tree trunks (there can't be too many leaves at this time of the year) and in particular your own body can block the signals. It may also be necessary to keep other electronic equipment (e.g. a mobile phone) some distance away.

Many thanks to all for the responses.

So as to be a little clearer I should explaIn:

Power Control:
Auto Power Saving ....... OFF AFTER 5 MINUTES
AUTO SCREEN ........ OFF AFTER 3 MINUTES
Screen alerts every 3 minutes

Advanced Power Control:
Power Saving Mode set NORMAL
Hibernate TImeout 1 hour

I was carrying the unit in my pocket occasionally retrieving it to check the position. Of course each time I took it from pocket I needed to switch ON again !

At times I looked at the GPS screen but to check for more distant direction switched to planning screen - then back to GPS and into pocket (still switched ON)

I had hoped to set the walk to track and then store it for future use but as the bread crumbs are not a true reflection (ie I might think that the direction indicates that I need to swim the lake !) this is not that useful

Perhaps my settings are not correct ?

question how did you switch it on.
did you just press a button on the sides or foot of the screen OR
did you press the on/off button?
if you press any of the buttons mentioned on the second line it should wake the machine from its slumbers IF i remember correctly- show a position and breadcrum trail
then after your time interval (3mins) go back to 'sleep' until activated yet again at your command by button press.

Thanks to all - your comments VERY much appreciated.

I have read a now re-read the power instructions and have a better understanding.

Of course I've also taken Neil's specific settings advice and realise that I will now be more in control when I hit the track again.
