Maybe the Google Map tile server had a case of the mondays? _________________ Lutz

But Google Maps was working fine, and still is.
CamerAlert is still not displaying the map this morning. _________________ Anton |

Have you rebooted the phone? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Yes, I did so at the time it first happened (removed and inserted the battery) and have just done so again. Google Maps still displays the map and CamerAlert still does not show any map at all. _________________ Anton |

Using same phone and software.
I posted about a week ago, a similar sort of problem, lost cameras and map on travelling the length of M4.
The phone didn't lock or crash though, I just let it run and after a while it all came back, about 20-30 mins later same thing. Happened about 2/3 times I think.
As posted at the time, I put it down to speed, and possible loss of GPS and / or 3G. The mobile signal does drop out on some sections of the M4 because I've lost connection when making a call.
Hasn't happened since, and CA is working fine since.

Interesting that it's happened to others too.
It happened to me when about to come off the M6 onto A449. I pulled over to investigate and rebooted at that time as it appeared that the phone had lost GPS as well (although I'm now not sure that it did).
I'm at home, with a good WiFi signal, and obviously stationary, but the problem still exits.
Interestingly, showing diagnostics and watching the Mb suggests that maps are being pulled in - just not displayed - not sure if I'm interpreting that correctly though. _________________ Anton |

Which may well be linked.
The app is designed for use on the move in the car, you need to try it in the car first. You are testing in what we term 'couch mode'.
Can you try on a short run first please? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Icll do a short run as you suggest.
Note though that the problem first surfaced while driving home from work, after having used it successfully when driving to work eight or so hours earlier, and on several other driving occasions, as well as in couch mode.
In short, it's worked fine since I first downloaded the beta at Xmas, until about 01:30 this morning.
I'll do another test while driving, and report back. _________________ Anton |

Indeed, I'm not doubting the issue occurred whilst driving, but you won't be sure that it is resolved until you test in a moving vehicle which should force the map refresh. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Unfortunately that doesn't mean much any more. With the new version of Google Maps 5 Google have for the most part stopped using their own map tile server. They now render vector based maps, like all the big players do. I hope that some day they will also open up the vector data to the developers as this would result in much less data to be transferred (but it may put more strain on the device).
In Settings...Manage Applications there is an option to delete all data for an application. Maybe it is worth trying this option for CamerAlert (BE AWARE - this WILL reset all settings). _________________ Lutz

Okay, did a driving test -- but CA started displaying the map again before I even started the engine! My car was just outside my house, so was still using wifi (good signal), i.e., identical to a stationary test, as it was earlier.
I have no idea what the cause might have been (which is always a little worrying) but happy that it's now working again.
I'm curious -- why did you feel that a test-on-the-move might help point to a solution? After the problem occurred at 02:30, and after I'd rebooted the device, I drove the rest of the way home with CA on but still not displaying the map. Wasn't that the same as a test-on-the-move? Why would another test-on-the-move now have shown anything different? _________________ Anton |

Without the logs we don't know what the exact cause was but it's not uncommon for Google's map server to throw a wobbly and stop serving map tiles.
If that was the case, the reboot would have made little difference. But later, once the server is working again, the app may simply have needed a nudge, i.e. some movement into a new tile area to force it to ask Google for new tile data once again.
It's guesswork of course without more information. If this becomes a prevalent issue then we'll look more closely. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Darren might be on to something. The operating system is caching a certain amount of map tiles (you can test that by loading a few, and then cutting the data connection - you'll still see some map areas).
So maybe the cache went bad (got loaded with invalid tiles) and these "white" tiles only got cleared after you covered a wide enough distance for the cache to be recycled.
Maybe :-) _________________ Lutz

'hellybob' and 'LittleDuceCoupe' - does it give the 'All Clear' sound and carry on alerting for overspeed? or does it not even give the All Clear?

I tested this again on my normal commute home and it didn't give me the "all clear" message. It just started saying 40 all the time as before. |
