Slightly disappointed that as a subscriber, I still have to pay even if it only 59p...
You need to download and install from the Android Market.
I am fairly new to Android and have been avoiding paying through the Market (partly because I saw some story about paying 59p for an app, then being charged £2 for a foreign exchange to Google). I prefer buying direct, like WidgetLocker which I bought from the developer using PayPal.
Will PGPSW offer that option?

The maps are provided over the air using the Google Maps tiles. This is a standard Android SDK facility. The database download covers all countries every time you update. If you are driving abroad then you will probably get a lot of charges for your roaming data use! You can turn off mobile data in your main Android settings or simply use 'Show map: Never' and turn off 'Allow transmission' of any submitted cameras from within the app. You will still get warnings for cameras but it will disable loading the map tiles.
59p? Well, that's the price of the iPhone app. It's only fair to charge the same! It would be odd to charge say £30 for a Windows version of software but £45 for the Mac version.
Plus with 50 database releases in a year for £19.99 each update costs about 40p so really you're getting the app for 19p and 40p of it covers the cost of the 'free' Latest Database guarantee

Are you actually being serious?!
As a mobile phone user I pay a set 'subscription' fee for my contract. If I want an extra, such as unlimited data add-on, then I pay extra. Likewise, you subscribe to the speed camera database and if you want the added extra then you pay the whopping 59p. Just like you would have to buy a TomTom or Garmin if you wanted to use your database subscription on another device.
We could, however, make the app free and not allow you to link to your current subscription/account. Instead we could force users to set up a new subscription for the mobile app. Would that be preferred? As it stands I think we are being more than generous! Do TomTom or Garmin allow their database to be installed across multiple devices in the same household?

As for the charge, if you are UK based and use a UK card then you will only be charged the 59p price of the app. If you use a non-UK card then you may be charged a conversion fee but this would be entirely down to your card provider and out of our hands I'm afraid.

I am happy to pay for open source development, like I went Ad-free on MoDaCo.com to help support ROM development for my San Francisco.
Paying PGPSW direct means that you don't have to pay Google 30% or whatever...
I realise that additional charges are not down to the developer.

It wasn't clear if your comment was a tongue in cheek joke or serious though. It's an additional charge, as it is for iPhone as it's an app. Your subscription is for the data.
Anyways, as has been explained, there is no plan currently to offer the .apk directly, but that's not to say we won't consider it. It's just that, the Market makes the distribution of updates easier for us and for you, as well as the wider audience it will benefit from.

Well ours will link to your subscription, has Google maps as an option, can update in-app, voice alerts, many more options for configuration, reports facility (so you can submit cams and hopefully get Lifetime Sub) and much more.

CamerAlert = 59p
EZCam = £2.49
If we change the file format or download method or login stuff for any reason EZCam would need to recode and release an app update after the event. With CamerAlert the update would be available as soon as any changes were made as it's all controlled by us.
