Hi,
I'm new to this GPS lark having recently purhcased a GPS receiver and TomTom Navigator to put on my iPAQ, and have been looking at this site quite a lot. I've got everything up and running, and have been very pleased so far.
One thing I'm particulary intrested in is the POI database, but I'm a little confused as to if I need to install another product to sit on top of TomTom Navigator 3?

Hi Brierls,
to the forum.
You may need a POI detector, which can be set-up to give you advance warning of any user created POI. There are several to choose from, but I would recommend CheckPOInt 2.02 (which is free and can be downloaded from this website).
You may want to load the POIs manually. If you do then you just need to download the POI of your choice, unzip it and place the .BMP and .OV2 files in the map folder of your PDA. Then shut down and restart TTNav (TomTom Navigator) and you should be in business.
If you wish to automate downloading and synchronising for updates then you may want to look at the POI-Sync page.
Oh, BTW, could you please update your profile so that we know what country you’re located in? Sometimes your location may have a bearing on the answer you’re given.

Thanks for the swift reply. So basically you can add POI's by just adding them to the map directory, but if you want to be warned of them (i.e. in the case of the speed camera POIs) you need a 'plugin'.
Just out of interest where is the maps folder within TomTom Navigator 3? I've got TomTom installed on my SD card and have 3 folders - "TomTom ~ GPS", "TomTom Navigator" & "TomTom Navigator Voice". When I first loaded TomTom it said there were'nt any maps installed, so I looked through my CD and copied what looked like map files into the "TomTom Navigator" folder, all started OK. Last night I installed v3.03 and its coming up with the "no maps installed" error on startup. The map files I originally copied are still there. Any ideas? _________________ TomTom GO 950 LIVE

Yes that’s correct. There are a lot of useful (and free) POIs that have been submitted by members, which you just place in the map folder. Yes, you need a TTNav plug-in for advanced warning. GPSAssist is a very good one, but I’d start off with CheckPOInt 2.02 first.
You should have the following path (or similar) on your SD card, which is your map folder:
Storage Card\Great_Britain Navigator Map
The folder should contain files like: cline.dat; cnode.dat; cname.dat; etc.
I know that some people had problems when they first installed TTNav3.03. I think that a removal and re-installation may fix it. Have a search around the threads in this forum.
It sounds like you have a custom installation. I installed TTNav2.00 onto my set-up and over time installed 2.xx as the updates occurred. When version 3 came out the CD came with TTNav3.01, the last update was 3.04T. All installs have been to the default locations (as suggested by the install software) and I have been very lucky as they all installed successfully first time. I installed the software first onto the PDA, then the map data onto the storage card.
Finally, SD cards can be temperamental and the Scandisk brand has a very poor reputation on this forum. Unfortunately a lot of brands are rebadged Scandisk, which makes matters worse. If you have another SD card to try then you may want to test with that one. If you decide you want to get another SD card then ask the retailer for one that works in a PDA, that isn’t a rebadged Scandisk, and that is preferably a Panasonic SD card.

I'll give CheckPOInt 2.02 a go - I've noticed from your signature that it is your application of choice. If its good enough for a PocketGPSWord moderator, then it'll certainly be good enough for what I'm using it for.
I checked my storage card and the maps had gone walkabout, I've re-installed now and they're there in the 'Storage Card\Great_Britain Navigator Map' directory on my SD card. Unfortunately I only discovered this site after buying my SD card (£60.55 delivered for 512mb Sandisk looked very cheap), but I thought I'd be safe going for a well known brand like Sandisk. I think I'll stick with it for a while, see how it goes.
Thanks for your advice, I'm sure I'll be asking more noddy questions sometime soon...
