|
|
Thinking about putting a Royaltek Bluegps in the cargo area of my Jeep. There is a convient power outlet and I could also wire an antenna between there and the roof.
Is this a good idea? Do I need to see the lights?
Is there such a thing as cradles for receivers? I'd put it up front but already have enough junk between the phone, pocket pc etc.
Where's the best spot? thanks |

I have a similiar setup with a Deluo Blackbox tucked away in the spare tire compartment, and an external antenna on the roof in the wind protected area behind one of the roof rails. Works perfect, and I don't need to see any lights for that - it simply works.
The only tricky part is to get the antenna cable from the trunk to the roof. I tried to simply run the cable over the back door rubber (which is pretty voluminous). So far it seems to work fine, neither the rubber nor the cable seem to suffer from that. But if you want to do it more professional you will have to find another - equally watertight - way. I was not brave enough to drill holes into the rubber or the roof. _________________ Lutz

Hi,
I have an Holux GR230 and I have it sat in a box in the boot connected to an external aerial which is attached via a magnet to the roof - I just ran the wire up through the boot rubbers and it works fine - best thing about this set up is that when I take the pda out of the cradle there is nothing visible to attract the attention of tea leaves... Plus I hate wires so other than a power lead to the cradle there is no clutter at all.

Hmm... I still think for permanent installatiion you should get a power source that is linked to the ignition. It's just safer. _________________ Lutz

Well, i'v been testing a while with the cables that are "inside" the Toolbox of my car (I think it's the best place to "hide" the gps ans pass the antena's cable to the roof following the Structural Iron Tubes) and I haven't found the right "ignition" power supply
Reading the User's Manual, on section "2.1.1 Power Cables" you can read something like:
Quote: |
IMPORTANT: For customers who have chosen the cigarette lighter adapter version, please keep in mind that your GPS and recorder will be restarted each time your vehicle is activated (you will not lose any tracking data, nor will you write over any existing data). The cigarette light adapter prevents the BlackBox GPS(TM) from being a "true tracking device" as it can only record while the vehicle is turned-on. Please also keep in mind that the GPS will require approximately 2 minutes of montionless activity before it can acquire satellites upon start-up. For the fixed installation, the GPS is always on and will require minimal satellite acquisition time.

I cannot found the power consumption of the device, and there isn't any advice of "battery drain"...
I think that it's better to mail deluo for "advice".... |

As for power consumption, simply put an amperemeter in between the black box' plus cable and your power supply's plus. This will hep you to calculate how long it will take the Blackbox to completely drain the battery ;-) _________________ Lutz

I got a response from Deluo (In Spanish):
Quote: |
stimado Rafael:
Atentamente,
El Equipo de Deluo.
|
It says that the consumption is about 200 mA and this canno't drain your battery
My Battery is safe then! i'v been driving with it today, with TomTom and my IPAQ3970... it's better not to exceed the speed limit, or the voice will arrive too late... |
