Whats up with your current device if all it needs is a new battery I would consider changing it for a new cell, the 720 is still a very capable device unless something other than the battery has failed - Mike

I agree Mike a nice little box. Its not the battery. It works OK for anything from 5 mins to an hour then it locks up, nothing works, it then resets itself and I get the yellow line. It may then work for a while or it may come on and say here I am then lock again and it will keep repeating the cycle. I have tryed the flash tool, reinstalling the app, upgrading to the latest app, using the reset, thumping it, talking to it, but nothing will make it work when its in fault mode or crash when its in working mode. So unless you have any thoughts, and I know your very good at this stuff it may be time for an upgrade.

The internal drive could be failing. It could be worth copying everything to an HDSD card, or loading it with a backup of the app and the map(s). That could well get it going again and save you the cost of a new, inferior, device.

Agree with Calomax, it is possible that the internal flash memory is dying. Using a memory card instead means the device will run off the memory card and bypass the internal flash.

That could be the solution. Memory cards are cheap and all you need do is buy one of sufficient capacity and then copy the internal memory contents to it or restore a backup (which you should take now if you don't have one!).

Thanks guys. I have a 2Gb card and am now copying the backup to it. How do I make the 720 boot from the card rather than the internal drive?

It will default to memory card IF there is a valid operating system on it.

That's exactly what happened to my 720 and I've continued using it with everything moved onto a memory card for years.

I spoke toooooo soon. Today it worked fine for an hour. Then locked up, reset itself, rebooted (Yellow line) put my position on screen then instantly locked up again. This went on over and over again. I have everything running on the SD card, even tryed running back on the internal drive. - No use - Don't know what to do next, except bin it.
